AVRant #58: Bad Manuals, Subs, and HD

April 10th, 2008

Dina’s got a new contest suggestion… let us know if that is of interest to you. Are there hidden costs of home theater? You bet. Jeb identifies one. What has a more justified cost – fabric or home theater equipment? Tom and Dina discuss. If you have a long digital cable run, which do you choose, TOSLink (optical) or Coax? Brandon’s got a question about a boomy sub. Tom went to a birthday party with an “impressive” system. Guess how impressed he was? Is there ever going to be a Blu-ray player with 7.1 analogue outputs. Do you really need an amp? Who has the worst manuals? What is “bridging” an amp. Daniel is having a problem with Time Warner. Tom tries to help. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

Don’t you need an AM/FM receiver and not just an amp and preamp to be a receiver? Or has that requirement gone the way of AM/FM radio?

    jflak,

Technically you’re right. A preamp and and amp together is an integrated amp. It takes a tuner to make it a receiver.

Another hidden cost to remember. After purchasing and setting up your HT you will most likely have a substantial negative balance in your “Honey-do” account.

Dina, it is a great time to be in Utah (although we will be flying to Florida in two weeks for vacation), enough snow in the mountains to go skiing/boarding, snowmobiling, or sledding yet it will be warm enough this weekend to be outside. Plus for all of us Audioholics nerds RBH is always close by :).

Here is my t-shirt for this week’s podcast.

mbringle – awesome song. Seriously, though, I’d probably enjoy vegi’s a lot more if they screamed a little. They’re just so pathetic I can’t seem to take much joy from eating them.

Except for tomatoes – they’ve got it coming.

For “nameless guy” who wants a Blu-ray player that decodes every audio format and has 7.1 analogue outputs, in addition to the $2000 Denon DVD-3800BD CI and the identical Marantz BD8002 that are on the market now, Sony and Pioneer will be releasing players this year that offer full decoding of all audio formats with 7.1 analogue outputs. Sony’s is the $499 BDP-S550 and the Pioneer is the $999 Elite BDP-05FD. Both are due in “Q3”. The Sony is a full BD-Live (Profile 2.0) player. All three others are Bonus View (Profile 1.1).

So if you can wait a few months, the Sony S550 will be the lowest cost, plus the only one that is BD-Live compliant 🙂

Tell me about bad Manuals from Denon. When I bought my Denon AVR-3802, I didnt know much about home theater, the manual made it worst!!!
