Why me?

April 18th, 2007 4 comments

What exactly do I bring to the table? What are my qualifications for being part of an audio/video podcast? I will list them now…
1.
Yep. That’s right. Zip. Nada.

I am married to a man that I consider to be a geek (and I mean that in a good way) who has loved music and movies and speakers and subwoofers as long as he (or I) can remember. I live in a house with a rockin’ home theatre, which I love and enjoy quite often. But I do not understand it. I want to be able to turn in on and turn it off without using twelve different remotes. I like the whole universal remote thing, it works for me. (Which, as a sidebar, we USED to have until for some insane reason my husband digressed and now I have to ask him to turn it on and off for me. It might be a control thing.)

I do NOT understand how HDTV, our surround sound speakers or the projector works. And I don’t want to know. I do NOT know the difference between an amplifier and a driver and I think it is pretty remarkable that I am faintly aware that there IS a difference. To be clear, I have the same attitude about my minivan. Love it. Glad it works. Don’t need to know how.

I am just the voice of Everywomen. Every wife who has been showed yet another larger, more expensive set of speakers and said a silent prayer that the children get scholarships to college since there will be no money to send them. Every girlfriend who has willed herself to stay awake and feigned interest in plasma technology. Every woman who subscribes to one magazine for every ten that come to the house that are entirely written about home theatre equipment (????)with names like Electronic House and Stereophile. Whatever.

I am not angry. I do not have a chip on my shoulder. I don’t secretly wish the home theatre would self combust. I love the gear and the geek. I just am quite satisfied to NOT know how it works (the gear, not the geek. Believe me, after 15 years of marriage, I KNOW how the geek works.) And I find pleasure in poking a little fun at those who do understand it all and care, including my dear hubby.

So, I know you have (at least) a few questions. #1. Why, in heavens name, did anyone ask me to participate in said podcast? Your guess is as good as mine. #2. Why then, am I described as the “bravest woman in the world?” Tune in and listen to Tom for about 5 minutes and see if you can figure it out. I must be nuts. #3. Why did I agree to do this? (See #2.)
