AVRant #118: Butts and Racks

March 5th, 2009

The name pretty much says it all in this podcast – from beginning to end. The floorstanding speaker shootout was this past weekend including Salk, Krix, Dali, and Infinity speakers. Tom goes into detail about how it was conducted and what he hopes to glean from the data once he gets around to looking at it. What exactly is a transducer anyhow? Tom reviewed a Sanus component cabinet. Is HDMI wireless affordable yet? A few announcements and a preview of things to come. We’ve got a new deal and a new poll, please participate in both. Here is the link for the iPhone 3G RTA and SPL meter. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

Tom, sorry to hear about your job. I hope everything works out for you.

I notice that you used the least expensive amps Emotiva makes for the
shootout as opposed to one of their more expensive one or some really
    expensive amp from another company.
    To me this means one of two things;
those amps are that good or the amplification does not affect the speaker sound that much. Did I missed
    something?

  3. March 5th, 2009 at 15:05 | #3

Juan – Those were the amps available to us but really, it isn’t a problem. My room isn’t huge and none of these speakers present a very hard load so we never got close to clipping the amps. Emotiva gear in general is very overbuilt so I’d put their cheapest stuff up against the esoteric crap many times their price.

On the debut video I think Dina should wear a cheerleader outfit… just to start off the new video feature with a bang!

Do I smell a new AV Rant poll? lol

Sorry to hear about the job situation.

I really enjoy the podcast, so I hope it continues.

I hope something works out for you on the job front soon.

Good suggestion Clint. Now if only Dina would do anything I asked. That girl sure is head strong. 😉

Andy – Thx. Hey, I’m just like everyone else trying to make it through these tough economic times. I’m just hoping it turns around sooner rather than later.

The best part of this podcast is hearing Dina try to contain her laughter in the background every Tom says caulk.

  8. March 6th, 2009 at 15:06 | #8

Clint, I don’t care what you smell. I am wearing my official AVrant turtleneck.

Darth Tom. Nice. I like this one.

Oh, and maybe this whole streaming thing is a bad idea. I just realized I will be providing Jeremy with frame after frame of images. Forget it.

    I know, I’ll have to start shaving…

    and showering…

    and wearing clothes.

Tabula rasa Tom? I’m not sure if you were showing off your knowledge or referencing Dollhouse. Anyway, Dollhouse is shaping up to be a decent show, better than that the last Friday night let down, Robinson Crusoe.

Sorry to hear about the job situation, Tom. I was actually under the impression that you wrote and edited for Audioholics in addition to another job. Was that the case, or was Audioholics your only employer? If so, couldn’t Gene just sell his $35,000 front speakers to raise a little extra capital to keep you on full time? :p

  12. March 9th, 2009 at 12:36 | #12

David – Tabula Rasa is actually a term I picked up when studying John Locke. And I agree, Dollhouse has been getting better. I thought we were going to start seeing more evidence of the “Dolls” remembering things after their wipes based on two weeks ago but last week didn’t have any of that. I don’t know, maybe he’ll turn this around. I understood that Buffy started slow too (I didn’t start watching until season 2/3).

Rob – Nope, I was full time. I think we’ll have to pull those speakers out of Gene’s cold, dead hands 🙂

I think if Gene’s speakers were ever actually clutched in his cold, dead hands, we’d have a pretty good idea of how he died; what do they weigh again? Something like 200 lbs. each? Crushed by your own speakers…what a way to go :p

Well that’s poopie that you had to go from full time to freelance. I guess I just thought you were doing another job because I was mixed up with the HTGuys who do the HDTV and Home Theatre Podcast (I’ve heard them talk about having other jobs) and Clint too, who seems to do quite a few installations on the side. Hey, maybe you could team up with Clint so that he doesn’t try to do another attic install all by himself and rip his shoulder out again!

It would have been worth having video this week just to see Dina turn purple trying not to laugh every time you said rack or butt.

BTW, a transducer is a device that changes the form of energy, A speaker transducer changes electrical energy to sound. A microphone changes sound to electrical energy.

Stupid Twitter cutting off my urls. Here is a cool DIY rack from Ziv (that dude from the Israeli website) – http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://www.hometheater.co.il%2Farticle1253&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=iw&tl=en

Another hilarious podcast! Please be careful to keep your head above the “fart joke” level and I will definitely stay tuned. Butts and Racks are great, I’m also slightly disappointed in the timing though. A video of this one would have won Oscars. I was getting concerned about Dinas lack of breath there at the end.

Sorry to here about your freelance status, even if it didn’t affect your income, a little stability would be nice. I’m all for a donation button, check out the HT Guys, theirs is pretty smooth.

I, thankfully still have my job, because you’ve just given me a reason to upgrade my ipod.

PS My wife dragged me down to Bellingham Wa. last week and she personally tried to jump start your economy. I gave it a shot but Best Buy and Costco were totally out of Bluray players. I’ve got spousal approval and they’re not in stock??!!! W.T.H… Our stores in Canada may not be exotic but they have em.

    Another Tom
