AVRant #133: Speakover

June 18th, 2009

Dina’s back and of course the first thing on the menu is Rob. A bunch of stuff about video games including XBox rumors and the Halo killer. LG has a 15″ OLED coming out. HDMI 1.4 Ethernet poll is discussed along with a new acquisition for Amazon. The brightening of speakers – good, bad, or just screechy – Tom discusses. Some new interviews are in the works (hopefully). Mathew has a good suggestion, Monster has a new cable that Tom doesn’t hate, and Tom’s son’s birthday party was a hit. A story from Gene. ooVoo is furthermore banished from this podcast (4 crashes in 30 minutes) so the video is on hold until we can figure out something better. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

Dina, your math is off; if a 17 year old got out of prison in 23 years, he’d be older than 29 😉

Thanks for all the compliments, you two! I already have the super power of Verbose Word-Count Persuasion, but if I got to decide, I would definitely go for Time Manipulation 🙂

I got a kick out of the image of Dina talking at her computer speakers while simultaneously working out and watching a fitness trainer yelling on screen – lol I’d love to record an episode with Dina there so that Tom and I could really double up on the Geek Speak 🙂

And Tom, what am I going to do about you? You rent Speed Racer, Punisher: War Zone, Transporter 3 and apparently at least two other crappy movies; you complain about all of them and yet you STILL won’t give Breaking Bad even a chance! Maybe Netflix is telling you something with its 2 star predictions; maybe your tastes have matured. Maybe you are ready for an actual plot with wonderfully developed characters and excellent acting. Maybe, in addition to the hold-your-breath murder scenes, exploding heads on turtles and suspense that Breaking Bad provides, you are also ready for heart-wrenching decisions and complex emotional development.

It just might be, Tom. It just might be. 😀

    Tom….Tom….Tom…..

Did I just hear you say Transporter 3 was terrible? AND it was terrible because of the dialog?!

Does anyone watch any Jason Statham movie for the dialog?

Tisk Tisk. I’m removing your man card until further notice. Perhaps your next Netflix’s rental should be The Notebook. 😉

Tom you mentioned center channels and their off axis effects, how would you rate the axiom vp150 with tweets on the outsides? is it a good idea?

I was thinking about the whole HDMI 1.4 with Ethernet situation and decided that I really believe it is a feature that will eventually be used by many people, but it will happen in a very gradual, almost unnoticable way. For example, I could see it being included in virtually all components eventually. So someone buys a new TV that supports widgets. They connect that to the Internet using traditional Ethernet or WiFi. Then they get a new game system, connect it with HDMI to the TV and without really even noticing it, their new game system is now able to access the Internet as well. Then, maybe they get a home theatre in a box and again, without really even thinking about it, the HDMI 1.4 connection allows them to access Internet radio on that HTiB. And then they hook up a Blu-ray player and get BD-Live. There’s still just that one original Ethernet or WiFi connection to the TV, but thanks to HDMI 1.4, all of those other devices can access the internet too. I’m pretty sure it is that sort of simplicity for which the HDMI makers are aiming. It all just “happens” and you don’t really have to think too much about it. If it actually plays out that way, it could be nice 🙂
