Looks like I’ve got a new news writer…

April 20th, 2007 3 comments

One of our forum members, stratman (he plays guitar – get it?), has been writing up some good news articles for us of late. It’s been a dream of mine, as I mentioned before, to have a couple good news reporters submitting items to the website. He’s been putting in an average of 1-2 articles every other day now and I couldn’t be happier.

In other news, the Podcasting gear has shown up at J & Dina’s house. Tom’s will be showing up today as well… of course he’s out of town. I’ll be taking a trip up to his house on Wednesday to help set it all up. I’m also giving him my Denon DVD-3910 – cause I’m cool like that.

In still other news… we’re about to add a lot more content to the Audioholics website and reorganize the way we do trade shows… the key, of course, will be nabbingenough of our developers’ time to get it all done. I’m hoping Alan can get up a development environment over the weekend for us. We’ve got a lot planne, but it’s going to launch us pretty far indeed.

Oh yeah, Gene’s having a baby tomorrow… well, not him – his wife Tica. She’s been having a rough pregnancy so it’s cool that soon she’ll be able to move on to the next phases of recovery… oh, and complete baby dependence. Man, I am SO glad I’m not a woman! God knew EXACTLY what he was doing when he “let” women handle childbirth – cause honestly, we men would have figured out some alternative by now – it would have involved lots of machinery, tubes and chemicals and it wouldn’t be pretty!

I Need News Reporters.. Oh, and Single-chip DLP Sucks…

April 16th, 2007 3 comments

I need writers. I need good writers. I need good writers that can grab hold of relevant AV news and post it on the website. This doesn’t seem hard, after all I can take a news item and generate original content in less than 10 minutes. but try to find someone… ANYONE who seems interested in the task. I have yet to discover this person. I am not looking for a lifelong staffer, though who knows what we’d do if we found someone who was just stacking the site with good content… I am looking for a true reporter. Make the calls, send the emails… scoop the stories.

I mean – this could be so much fun! Are you out there news guy? Are ya? Send me an email will you, so I can get this ball rolling.

In other “news” I am wrapping up a review of the IN78. Now, I seem to have a problem. I have discovered after all of this time, that while I am still objective and reasonable…. I hate single-chip DLP. It’s pathetic. It’s worse than pathetic – it’s nonsensical (that means that it ‘makes no sense’ to you people who had problem s with dangling chads). Why on earth we can’t get 3 DLP chips inside a box for under $4000 is beyond me. Rainbow effect would be GONE. GONE. Picture quality would go up. Is DLP that difficult to manufacture that TI can’t fathom expanding its mid-to-upper end consumer products by a factor of 3? Is it that cost-prohibitive that only $10k products can have 3 chips?

LCOS has 3 chips.

3LCD has 3 chips.

Both have HAD 3-chips since inception. The very nature of a color wheel is ridiculous and reminds me of CRT and it’s archaic scan lines. Are we not, with HD, beyond trying to play “tricks” on the eyes (a la color wheel). I think we are. In fact I know we are.

DLP is lame in it’s 1-chip iteration and needs to be brought to 3-chip technology FAST. TI has had ample time to make money and the chips are not that expensive in terms of mass production. Greed is holding this technology from being all that it can be – mark my words.

Manufacturers unite – kick their butts and get that company on the right track. Throw out your color wheels and stop giving me a headache. Besides, LCOS and LCD are starting to come up with some tricks that are beginning to make you look very stupid.

Podcast #000: The Tom and Dina Show

April 12th, 2007 7 comments

OK, this time Tom takes on Dina for another version of our podcast test, but this time we’ll go ahead and label it as podcast #000. This is because the next podcast you hear will be podcast #001. That’s right – we’re going live! We’ve now seen Dina in action and, according to her, it’s time for all the non-geeks to unite and demand that “audioholics everywhere start talking in English.”

Podcast #-001 (more to come…)

April 9th, 2007 4 comments

This is to test an actual podcast between Tom and J. Walker Clarke to see how the system handles it. This dynamic duo are teaming up for this test and will likely result in one of those things neither ever wants anyone to archive or play again… :)  Look for more guest appearances by J. as Tom introduces special shows interspersed with the weekly podcast throughout the upcoming weeks.

These cats… haunt me… watching…

April 7th, 2007 Comments off

Commander: It’s been 2 days… the cats continue to pursue – even daylight hours are no deterrent. We’ve sought shelter indoors but they continue to stalk us… watching. This afternoon I peered outside to find one in my side yard. I almost shattered the glass banging on it to scare it away – but to no avail. I fear they have mutated into something… different… more, sinister.

Tonight I will post recon to see where they may be basing their operations, but I fear they are too migratory to track. It may be that they like to keep us guessing. Or it may be that they require no sleep. I hope they seek sustenance because it may be our only hope for a “cure”. I’ve called in for local, professional backup but they want me to come acquire one of their containment fields for temporary enslavement of the animal. I had a more… permanent… solution in mind.
