Second podcast of 2012 and we’re already innuendo-ing. Is that a word? Anyway, in today’s podcast, Rob H. is back on the air and as prolific as ever with a soup-to-nuts on soundproofing your room so your neighbors still like you when you up the bass. Also on the topics list:
Holiday sales of Consumer Electronics devices fall, but that’s only if you don’t count all the consumer electronics most of us use on a daily basis. Plus some positive news if you are the maker of a very large TV. Speaking of TVs, it’s CES and everyone is showing us their new prototype. Check out
Today’s the first podcast of the new year, Tom is still on vacation and Rob is here filling in. We’re talking about some sad news to start off the new year. Kodak might be filing for bankruptcy, Berkline went out of business in May, and Gibson and Onkyo announced a new business deal. Rob’s soup to nuts this week is on Calibration, both for video and audio: see links below the cut. Liz found a USB adapter for vintage video games, Retrode, which you should all check out. (And send us your old game cartridges if you don’t want em!) Liz and Rob go way off topic about TV content via the internet and cable television providers. Tom is still on vacation this week, and Liz has a bit of the post-holiday blues. Picking up the slack this week is loyal listener Will, bringing in the updates for your favorite set top boxes/roll-your-own software: XBMC, Boxee, Plex and Roku all announced updates this week. Also updated this week: the Logitech Harmony App for your favorite mobile device (iPhone, iPad and Android phones). Netflix announced that they’ve signed a deal with BBC Worldwide, and Hulu links in facial recognition, at least for some shows. Liz found the ultimate home theater component box (yea, right). Will found the best headphone accessory for Liz, and we discuss different personality types as expressed by headphones/ earbuds. Bonus topic: Pure Music and its companion product Pure Vinyl. Tom is on vacation in Thailand this week, so please welcome guest host Clint DeBoer of Audioholics.com. This week we ramble a bit about movies (LotR, the Hobbit, Great Gatsby in 3D) and Liz commits a mortal nerd sin and confuses Lord of the Rings with CS Lewis’ Narnia series. We talk way longer than we should about some really girly speakers, the BB3 Fully Wireless Portable Speaker by Boombotix. Liz gets political about SOPA, and Clint thinks the FCC’s CALM Act is going to make DSP redundant. In non-Netflix streaming news, Tesco Bundles Digital Copies with DVD Purchase, and Clint introduces Liz to Calibre, an e-book management system. Content is thin in the weeks leading up to CES, but Tom and Liz are up to the challenge. The iNuke Boom definitely made us say “Wow” (and some other things as well). Ultraviolet is still not living up to its promise. Netflix segment this week: Is Verizon acquiring Netflix? Tom butchers Netflix Chief Content Officer‘s last name, but Ted Sarandos has some interesting things to say about the Starz deal and the future of Netflix. Check it out! Liz gets hot and bothered (in a nerdy way) about the Geneva Conventions. Listener Sean wants you all to know about Denon’s free Airplay upgrade for all compatible devices. Liz zones out while Tom talks about Pioneer, and we discuss some programs for Remastering iTunes. Placebo effect? You decide. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley!
