AV Rant #386: SVS Check

June 13th, 2014 6 comments

Special thanks to Jason for supporting the podcast. People are buying SVS subs in droves. We’d like to think that the AV Rant podcast is a small but important part of that. This week, Jay wants to know what projector we’d buy with a $4k budget. Rohan is having some problems with his speakers and imaging and wants to know how to fix them. Plus he is getting some odd performance out of his Denon X2000 that he needs help with. Michael is looking for DJ equipment, Niels needs speakers good enough to compete with his high-end headphones, Carlos has some questions about listening modes, and Gary wants a new 32″ TV. Robert wants our honest opinion about his gear plus he wants to know about buying a few more subs. We’re happy to help. Coming soon, our podcast recording night will be moved to Mondays. We’ll talk more about this on our next podcast.

June 5th, 2014 4 comments

Special thanks to Niclas, Wilson, and Jack for supporting the podcast. This week, we have a listener that has tested Harman’s suggested curves and reports. Jack is still having problems calibrating his two subs. We help him out some more. Bill says that Zone outputs can be useful. Kris has a successful story of customer service (Denon) and of getting his wife involved in his subwoofer decisions. Shannon is out of the country and wants to be ready to shop when he gets back. What should he do? Steve is having a problem getting his surround-back speakers to play, Cesar wants a wireless sub, and Charles is having a problem with his speakers cutting out. Jonathan wants our take on a recent article over at Audioholics, Nick wants some more speaker suggestions for his wall-to-wall projection screen, and David and Bill want to know if we think they should jump on the Aperion Audio deals. Jason needs some surround speakers, Roland needs speaker for a showroom, and Zach wants some speakers for his garage.

AV Rant #384: Not Making it Easy

May 28th, 2014 6 comments

This week we have Niels, JS, and Shannon to thank for supporting the podcast. The AV Rant Race Team is on the road and doing well. With a brand new car, we’ve seen a 3rd and a 2nd so far! Go Team Rant! Jack has some questions about his new Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Plus sub including placement, volume, and what that bass extension/max output switch is for. He’s also interested in whether or not those LEDs people put behind their flat panels are a gimmick. John linked us up to a graduate-level course on acoustics. If you have the prerequisites, it’s free. Abby has a recommendation on inexpensive, high quality headphones for those in the recording industry. Jonathan has some questions about car audio, Alexandru about those extra-expensive seats at the Canadian theaters, and Andy links us up to a new Harman study that suggests we don’t really want a flat frequency response. Rob and Tom weren’t surprised. Bill is a new listener and wants to know what we think of Vandersteens, Jay is doing a reno and needs help on receiver choices and whether 6.1 would be worth it, and John is building a new home and needs help choosing and placing in-ceiling speakers. Lastly, Gary has some questions about contrast (in displays) and Abby wants to use her sub without disturbing her downstairs neighbors.

AV Rant #383: Playing with Your Mind

May 22nd, 2014 8 comments

This week we have Jorge and Dan to thank for supporting the podcast. You have questions, we have answers. Adrian has a question about power cords and how much of a difference they can really make. Jay points out the one way Tom would spend another dime on Star Wars. Andy has some additional resources for DIY room treatments. Dan took our (mostly Rob’s) advice and loves how his subwoofer blends with his mains. He also noticed a problem that is pretty common. Thanks for bringing it up! Kyle has a question about which separates to buy. Jay has some questions about receivers, Jon needs some headphones, and Todd needs some in-wall speakers. We freaked out Sujay but he has nothing to worry about. Jason bought some room treatments and his wife likes them so much, she wants more. Learn his secret at the end of this podcast.

AV Rant #382: Calibration Conundrum

May 14th, 2014 11 comments

Special thanks to Michael, Steve M., and Steven R. for supporting the podcast this week. We couldn’t keep this show going without you. We thought, going in, that this would be a short(ish) show so, of course, it is the longest one ever! We talk about Rob and Paul’s listening tests and subwoofer crawl (pics on Facebook) which led us into a discussion of subwoofer placement when your crossover is set higher than 80Hz. Abby wants to talk about high-res audio…so we do. Scott had a quick suggestions on how to find satellites. Gary has a follow-up question about 2.35:1 screens. Steve M. has an update about his room and we have a few additional suggestions. Plus, Rob misspoke! It is a momentous day! Todd wants to know what we think he should do with some free speakers, Gary has some questions about calibration (we’ll have a follow-up on this next week), and Nick wants us to weigh in on a couple of really heavy subs. Niclas has some thoughts on room treatments and suggests the Master Handbook of Acoustics, a suggestion we agree with. Paul wants to know if “name brand” stereo upgrades in cars are worth it and Michael wants to know a bit more about cascading crossovers. We briefly cover some news because…we really wanted to.
