AV Rant #367: Put Your Hands Down

February 21st, 2014 Comments off

This week we have a full crew to discuss more topics than we have time for – and we went way long. Questions from Steve about in-wall speakers and sound bars (which leads to a discussion of the term WAF – Wife Acceptance Factor), Abby about $500 center channel recommendations and timbre, and Michael about SVS, 4k, and video upscaling and upconversion are all addressed. Rob recommends this site for amazing art and Tom recommends you check out this Dolby YouTube video. Liz has a stunner at the end of the podcast.

AV Rant #365: Exclusive SVS Announcement

February 14th, 2014 Comments off

Happy Valentine’s Day for all you AV lovers out there. Why don’t you buy yourself an amp to celebrate! We have an exclusive SVS announcement at the end of this podcast. Stay tuned for the full story. We start off talking about target response curves for headphones – and yes, it is a curve and not a straight line. The full story here. We have questions from Nicolas about Axiom vs Aperion speakers, Andrew about MOSFET circuits, Gaylen about the “best” Epson projector for $1000-$2500, and Gary about audio mixes and 4k. Rob recommends the Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8, which is pretty much the least expensive way to connect 8 internal hard drives for massive storage in an HTPC. Tom recommends you check out this bookshelf speaker shootout article – 32 pairs in four different price brackets discussed…in Hebrew so you’ll need to use Google Translate.

AV Rant #363: Peaking Early

January 31st, 2014 Comments off

That wasn’t the original name of the podcast but Tom can’t remember what they settled on. Probably ‘Liz is Back’ because Liz is back! She reports on the worst thing that happened to her during her travels. We’ll be hearing more stories over the coming weeks. This week we take questions from Steve about setting sharpness for your display or projector, Austin about ripping vinyl to digital, and Gaylen about upgrading your projector plus a ton of listener comments. You’ll want to check out Facebook for all the links we mention. Rob recommends finding a local store with a Sony XBR-X900A 4K TV on display, and viewing the passive 3D experience that it provides because he doesn’t want to be the only one that likes 3D (even though he is). Liz recommends this YouTube video, and Tom recommends Shapify.me if you have a Kinect and want a 1/20th scale model of yourself for $60.
