AV Rant #225: In Pill Form

March 23rd, 2011 17 comments

I swear, the well on podcast names has run dry. What I need is a volunteer to listen to the podcast early and come up with a clever name. Anyhow, we’ve got outtakes so stick around to the end. Netflix gets into the content game (if you even logged into your computer this week you know this). What it means for Netflix and Firefly fans. Zediva – destined to go down in flames but we hope they take the 28 day waiting period with them. A Lord of the Rings announcement and a few revelations. Dynamic Range – why a lack of it sometimes doesn’t suck. Salk Veracity HT2-TL vs Aperion Audio Verus Grand towers – Tom’s opinion. Tom and Liz’s favorite apps. AV Rant #224: Tractor Beam

March 17th, 2011 3 comments

While we waited over half the podcast to say it, our hearts goes out to Japan. It’s St. Patty’s day so have a Guinness for Tom. It would be on Tom but you’d have to come to Perth. But if you want to, hey, we can work something out. Jonathan has a bone to pick with Blu-ray. Tom has some advice on why and when to use two subs. Tom’s Dad had an interesting experience (sort of). Will you watch movies on Facebook? Of course not. And Tom tells you who will and why The Dark Knight isn’t the right movie for the crowd. CEA makes a move that Tom doesn’t think is stupid. JVC puts out a new 3D camcorder that doesn’t look to be as good as Sony’s offering (though if they want to send their models to Tom for a test drive, he’s open to that). Someone invented a fricken tractor beam and Liz couldn’t be more excited. Except if it was covered in glitter. Watch Girl Walks into a Bar. It’s for the good of us all. Data caps suck. We’re just sayin’. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley! To see our (mostly) complete collection of show videos, click here. AV Rant #223: Geekgasm

Lots to talk about on this podcast – much of which didn’t make it to the topic list at the start. Stick around fro the end for Tom trying to talk about ohms and headphones without messing up the math or confusing Liz. He probably fails on both counts. Samsung has a cool new display that you’ll probably never own. Apple has a new product out… but we can’t remember what it is. There is a new Digital AV Adapter that Tom wants but thinks he shouldn’t need. Liz talks about when movies died. Some stuff about Star Wars, results of the last Twoll, and Tom announces a new Twoll about how long you keep your gear. AV After Dark may be making a comeback. Keep your fingers crossed. Jason has a question about Epik Subwoofers – we have a feeling that Epik won’t like Tom’s answer. Tom PROMISES that, by the time this podcast goes live, he’ll update the listener systems. AV Rant #222: Cranky Cohost

No, not Liz. Though that would have been cool too. Instead, Tom means to be misbehaving and, chances are, someone you know and love (and maybe bought products from) is going to get hurt. You’ve been warned. Manufacturer Madness. Stories from the front lines. Hsu goes a little overboard and it all goes to hell. Some cables that will NEVER be reviewed on Audioholics. An Axiom review? Corsair turns out to be the model by which all manufacturers should base themselves. Lots of behind the scenes action here. Juan takes some advice and it works. Tom gets real with his advice to emailers. Now’s the time to ask before he gets a good night’s sleep. Liz and Tom find the only 3D glasses they want and can’t have. Get your updated home theater into the Listener Systems now. Rebroadcasting broadcast TV. Guitar Hero – Zombie Edition. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley! AV Rant #221: Viral Twoll

February 24th, 2011 7 comments

Stay tuned after the music for out-takes. This week, the results of our most recent Twoll, a name that Liz hardily disagrees with. If all TVs were 3D TVs, would people actually use 3D? When shopping for TVs, what to keep in mind. Redbox is looking to get into streaming… someday. What do they need to be successful? Comcast versus Netflix via Level 3. Marantz AV7005 – Tom wants. Some more Bob news, updates to the Listener Systems, and questions from listeners. This is the Lawrence Lessig book Liz was talking about.
