AV After Dark #6: Opinions Change

October 28th, 2010 3 comments

This week Tom podcasts with the HT Guys. Netflix, Apple TV, and AirPlay. The guys weigh in on which box they’d most likely buy – Boxee, Roku, or Google TV. Tom’s got new speakers on the way, the guys have new displays, and Tom is unconvinced his opinion won’t change in a month or two. Thanks for listening. You can find AV Rant at their website (AVRant.com). Thanks to listener Ted for both the Intro and Outro music. Check out more of his work at www.thesysmusic.com. AV Rant #203: All About Projectors

October 21st, 2010 4 comments

Grammer Rob is back as co-host. Don’t worry those of you that have offered to be co-hosts. Tom has every intention of taking you up on it. He’s just been taking the easy road lately. As the name implies, Rob has a few things to say about projectors. If you are in to such technology, you might want to keep a pen and paper handy as he mentions quite a few model numbers. Netflix starts streaming in 5.1 – on the PS3 only. Tom has a few things to say to those that were complaining about having to use a disc for Netflix. Shifty get’s his day in court. A few thoughts on early announcements from Internet Direct companies. Jesse has a few insights into who is buying 3D displays. Buying Tom’s love. AV Rant #202: UI equals UX

October 15th, 2010 3 comments

Everyone welcome Leif back. This time Tom lets him talk. How has the recession affected the AV industry – Tom comments. Tom’s almost all talked out of 3D – almost. THX has some really, really great suggestions. Bill has a problem (check this pic if you want to see for yourself). Sony brings Google TV with a remote that Leif likes. If your new TV has Google or 3D, can you assume it has all the other technology as well? Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley! AV Rant #201: CEDIA 2010

October 7th, 2010 1 comment

Clint DeBoer makes a special guest appearance to talk about CEDIA. What’s big? 3D of course. Tom and Clint tackle a few listener questions including the “best” Blu-ray player to stream Netflix/YouTube, is SACD worth the bother, and some suggestions for reference material. Are all Best Buy employees idiots? Tom says, “Eventually.” AV After Dark update, a bit on Google TV, and more than a little off-topic banter. AV Rant #200: Amp or Speakers

September 30th, 2010 8 comments

As promised, Leif is back as co-host. Tom thinks he did this just so he could get some ideas about what to upgrade next. Tom had an exceptional amount of caffeine that morning so you might need to play it back in slower. Up first – the Bose VideoWave which makes about as much sense to Tom and Leif as a life raft made out of ham and cheese sandwiches. A bit on amps, what Clint’s 3D CEDIA experience taught Tom, and something cool that might be coming from Apple in the future (though a phone or universal remote with the same feature would be just as cool).
