AVR #179: It’s an Engineer Thing

May 6th, 2010 2 comments

Dina had couple of Mac problems this week so no video and I had to cut a bit out in the middle. Hopefully it still makes sense. Tom gets a comment via Ara. What exactly is HDMI 1.4a and what does it mean for you? Tom tries to explain but the engineers thwart him at every turn. Jeremy is angry, Tom sorta agrees. Esoteric cables – what they really are. An esoteric product that… really makes no sense at all. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley. To see our (mostly) complete collection of show videos, click here. AV Rant #178: DVRetard

April 29th, 2010 7 comments

Tom starts off on the wrong foot this podcast – and Dina catches him on it. Why does Amazon mock Tom so? Dina liked a movie that Tom liked. That’s probably one of the signs of the apocalypse. What’s the deal with California and video games? Takes a lawyer to figure it out. Hulu is looking for cash, YouTube looking for more. Are two subs a panacea? Will Gizmodo break even? What’s new with Denon and what Tom thinks about it. Why integrated amps are more expensive than similarly configured receivers. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley. AV Rant #177: Smolding the Podcast

April 22nd, 2010 2 comments

You hear the one that says that Mac’s just work? Check out Tom’s audio to see if that is true. This week we talk about the new iPhone and the inevitable fallout, about the Engadget Netflix/Redbox poll, new Optima gaming projectors, and Australia. Ian wants Tom’s opinion on Emotiva and balanced subwoofer outputs. Tom talks about the TH-1040-VFM review (it’s a mount), a new sub from B&O, and extra’s on DVDs. So, how does Tom feel about Yamaha? Mixed. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley. To see our (mostly) complete collection of show videos, click here. To get our iPhone app, visit the iTunes store. AV After Dark #4: The High Cost of 3D

April 19th, 2010 Comments off

Braden’s computer cut out early in the podcast so it’s only Tom and Ara this time. Netflix weighs in heavily in this podcast with a bit on their migration to the Wii and how they’ve signed more deals that delay new releases. What does that mean for you now and what do Ara and Tom think that holds for the future? Ara has some suggestions on HD Camcorders. What is the real cost of 3D? How will they get you to buy? Would you shop at a Brick and Mortar Circuit City? Thanks for listening. You can find the HT Guys at their website and AV Rant right here. We really enjoy these collaborations and hope you do too. Thanks to listener Ted for both the Intro and Outro music. Check out more of his work at www.thesysmusic.com. Click here to get the HT Guys iPhone app, and here for the AV Rant version.
