AVRant #162: Dina’s Druthers

January 7th, 2010 15 comments

Note – yes I know there is no such thing as a agraphobic (not sure why I messed that up – it’s agoraphobic) though it sounds funny.

Welcome to the year of 3D! If it doesn’t make it this year, things look pretty bad for the new format. But never fear you pundits, there is plenty going on. We’ve got Discovery, Sony, and IMAX teaming up for a channel, ESPN offering a little 3D (for a bit at least), and Mitsubishi with an add-on Tom thinks you shouldn’t have to pay for. Vizio has a new line coming out, but will anyone buy it? Some more on Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Volume, a bit about movies we’ve seen lately, and a bombshell about The Speaker Company (you’re not going to believe this one). Tom has a theory about his FedEx driver and lusts after some Klipsch speakers. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley. Yamaha – Download Our App or We’ll Eat Your Brains!

January 7th, 2010 2 comments

Yamaha_zombieSo Clint forwards me the picture to the right. Apparently Yamaha is trying to scare people into downloading their free app. Sure, it’s free (unlike ours which would be a great way for people to support the show) but tell me that chick doesn’t look like she’d rather be gnawing the nose off your face? Maybe I’ve just been playing too much Left 4 Dead 2, but if I met her in a dark alley (and had a cricket bat on hand), it’d be on.

Tweeking, Tubes, and Binaural Sound

January 4th, 2010 4 comments

So during a random Google search I came across a news article which is actually a scan from a newspaper. This got me thinking… how old of a loudspeaker review could I find? Well, I didn’t really find one but I found references to loudspeakers way back into the 20’s. Most of the articles forced me to pay to read them (yeah right, this is the Internet) so I may have missed one or two. What I wanted to do was to compare an old article to a new one and see how similar they were. After a while I gave up on that idea but not before I came across this.

Report from the First International Sight and Sound Expo
The Milwaukee Journal, Sept 3, 1953

So taking the article apart, the first bit is about how may people where there and how hardcore they were. That pretty much sounds like any CES writeup nowadays. Next, they are talking about binaural sound (we’d call that Stereo). What I found interesting was how similar that description resembles every other new tech that has come out. Read more…

David’s rant on AV Idiots

December 31st, 2009 7 comments

In a recent podcast, I mentioned a story by a listener David. Here is the entirety of his email:

Around this time last year, as a favor, my girlfriend and I babysat for her co-teacher’s infant. In the same spirit of the season we were planning on going over there again tonight. My girlfriend called to make sure we were still on for tonight. At some point during this call she was told something to the effect of, don’t let David touch the electronics. Read more…

AV Rant #161: In the Studio with Tim

December 31st, 2009 1 comment

This week we have a special guest host Tim Leitner. He’s a studio engineer from New York that is more than happy to share his experiences with recording music of different types, styles, and for different applications. Tom didn’t intend for this podcast to be an interview with an industry professional but it sort of turned out that way. Some of other topics on the menu were setting up a projector, Avatar, DirecTV’s new satellite, 3D coming to the home, buying furniture, and Audyssey’s Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley. To see our (mostly) complete collection of show videos, click here. To get our iPhone app, visit the iTunes store. Read more…
