AV Rant #161: In the Studio with Tim

December 31st, 2009 1 comment

This week we have a special guest host Tim Leitner. He’s a studio engineer from New York that is more than happy to share his experiences with recording music of different types, styles, and for different applications. Tom didn’t intend for this podcast to be an interview with an industry professional but it sort of turned out that way. Some of other topics on the menu were setting up a projector, Avatar, DirecTV’s new satellite, 3D coming to the home, buying furniture, and Audyssey’s Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume. Another Volume Control Option

December 31st, 2009 Comments off

Getting irritated by changing volumes across different sources (CD to DVD to XBox to PS3… etc.)? Gefen just announced their GefenTV Auto Volume Stabilizer. This device has analogue and digital (TOSlink, S/PDIF) inputs and outputs with a selector control for which audio is stabilized (read – compressed). It is Dolby compatible (yea?) which pretty much excludes DTS and any of the high def audio formats (no HDMI). It equalizes the volume from the source plus between the different sources connected to the device. It is meant to go between a source (or sources) and either the speakers, receiver, or display (depending on your situation). Knowing Gefen it is probably expensive and it doesn’t sound like something most of us would be interested in. Look for this device coming to a custom installation near you. AV After Dark #2: Slow Descent

December 28th, 2009 3 comments

On this second edition of AV After Dark, we slowly degenerate into cruder humor until Ara pulls the plug. Someone has to be the adult we suppose. Is online the future of content delivery? Tom, Ara, and Braden weigh in. PlayOn – never pay full price. Bitstream or PCM your Blu-ray? Orb Audio – does sex sell speakers? McIntosh is bringing back the boom box. Toilet paper iPod dock – on Braden’s Christmas list. Thanks for listening and everyone have a happy New Year. You can find the HT Guys at their website and AV Rant right here. We really enjoy these collaborations and hope you do too. Thanks to listener Ted for both the Intro and Outro music. Check out more of his work at www.thesysmusic.com.

AV Rant #160: Troubleshooting Xmas

December 24th, 2009 5 comments

Tom has Clint for a guest host because… well… he’s been busy. No excuses here, we’ll have a listener on next week. For this podcast Tom and Clint had a bunch of topics but really only covered one – what to do with all that new Christmas gear you unwrapped. If you didn’t get any, well, never fear, your day will come. Clint and Tom address such problems as faulty wiring, hanging projectors, running power, hooking up amps, and careful planning. This may be the podcast you want to keep on your iPod for future reference. Hope everyone had/has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. AV Rant #159: Making Tom Uncomfortable

December 17th, 2009 5 comments

Tom starts off the podcast with a bit of a slip. A bunch of listener questions are addressed including the lowdown on headphone amps, how bad now sounds good, and when to upgrade your receiver. Everyone say Hi to Math Mike who we hope is from MIT or the Midwest or anything starting with M. If you haven’t checked out our new iPhone app (link below and to the right), please do. Dallas 3D test is a fail. How Sex in the City can kill your Blu-ray player. HDBaseT – not sure what you are but you sound good so far.
