AVRant #134: Stoning

June 25th, 2009 12 comments

Guest co-host number 2 is Andy and he joins Tom this week. They tackle a number of issues this week including the complexity of electronics and how that will affect the sales staff of tomorrow, game lag and displays, and using professional monitors instead of home theater speakers. Ted wants to know if little metal bowls could possibly make a system sound better. No, no they can’t. All things being equal, what’s better, bookshelves or floorstanding speakers? What’s the deal with di-pole speakers and surrounds? How do you run multiple surrounds if you have more than one seat? (Here’s that link to Gene’s article Tom was talking about.) Does Tom actually like Shia La Beouf? Since when did $50 become a “deal” for 3 discs? What is on the horizon as far as downloads vs. discs? How does Redbox play into it? Andy is a talker so this one is a bit long. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

AVRant #133: Speakover

June 18th, 2009 7 comments

Dina’s back and of course the first thing on the menu is Rob. A bunch of stuff about video games including XBox rumors and the Halo killer. LG has a 15″ OLED coming out. HDMI 1.4 Ethernet poll is discussed along with a new acquisition for Amazon. The brightening of speakers – good, bad, or just screechy – Tom discusses. Some new interviews are in the works (hopefully). Mathew has a good suggestion, Monster has a new cable that Tom doesn’t hate, and Tom’s son’s birthday party was a hit. A story from Gene. ooVoo is furthermore banished from this podcast (4 crashes in 30 minutes) so the video is on hold until we can figure out something better. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

Best Browser?

June 15th, 2009 4 comments

TG Daily did some testing on Internet browsers after Apple claimed that Safari was the best. Very interesting results. Of course, I can’t use Firefox 3 because it doesn’t play nice with the interface for posting to Audioholics and I can’t use Internet Explorer 8 because it crashes one of the programs I use to edit the podcast. IE7 doesn’t allow you to do some of the edits you need for WordPress for AV Rant (never tried IE8) through FF is fine. Safari and Chrome have the same problems as Firefox 3 with the Audioholics site so I’m pretty much stuck with Firefox 2. What is your favorite browser and why?

New poll

June 11th, 2009 1 comment

If you don’t know what I’m talking about in the HDMI poll, read this informative article. At the very least, HDMI 1.4 didn’t increase the already uber high bandwidth requirements with this release. Just understand that the 3D/4k they are talking about is running at something like 30 frames per second (or lower) as per the spec. It isn’t nearly as intensive as the 60 frames per second 1080p is requiring right now. The new connector is cool (I guess) as is the protected car one. The big one is the audio return channel which eliminates one whole cable if you are using your TV as a decoder for your cable/OTA antenna. The idea with the Ethernet is that you have one device that is connected to the network (wired I guess but I suppose it doesn’t have to be) and everything else that is connected to that device with the new HDMI cables can access it as well. We’ll see how/if that works as devices are released. Discuss.

AVRant #132: More Microsoft?

June 11th, 2009 19 comments

Our first guest Co-host makes his debut this week. Rob H is from Canada but we don’t hold that against him (no matter how he spells color). This week we talk about the new Harman Kardon BDP 1 Blu-ray player, how NAD hates Tom, and about the AV123 forum non-reopening. Glen has a question about baluns, Ryan bought new speakers, and Circuit City is returning in zombie form. Zombie no-return-policy form. The BenQ Joybee GP1 review is discussed along with bass management, digital downloads, and a great mystery deal. Tom may get some green HDMI cables. Yea… Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.
