AV Rant #385: Floorless Theater

June 5th, 2014

Special thanks to Niclas, Wilson, and Jack for supporting the podcast. This week, we have a listener that has tested Harman’s suggested curves and reports. Jack is still having problems calibrating his two subs. We help him out some more. Bill says that Zone outputs can be useful. Kris has a successful story of customer service (Denon) and of getting his wife involved in his subwoofer decisions. Shannon is out of the country and wants to be ready to shop when he gets back. What should he do? Steve is having a problem getting his surround-back speakers to play, Cesar wants a wireless sub, and Charles is having a problem with his speakers cutting out. Jonathan wants our take on a recent article over at Audioholics, Nick wants some more speaker suggestions for his wall-to-wall projection screen, and David and Bill want to know if we think they should jump on the Aperion Audio deals. Jason needs some surround speakers, Roland needs speaker for a showroom, and Zach wants some speakers for his garage. Thanks for listening. Now, don't forget to:

AV Rant Listener Fred C. —

showed off his (very heavily braced) DIY subwoofer cabinet a couple of weeks ago. He forwarded us the plans from GR Research that he used and modified for his own build. Check it out:

    AV Rant Listener Zach —

is looking to purchase some speakers that can survive the temperature and humidity swings of his garage. Tom and Rob agree with Zach’s plan of using outdoor speakers that are sealed and designed to withstand some weather and moisture.

Above is a good website resource for finding some outdoor speaker rankings. And the good folks over at The WireCutter have their suggestions, too:

Over at the Home: On Podcast, they recently did an excellent interview with the CEO and CTO of INSTEON Home Automation. If you’re at all interested in home automation, we highly recommend listening to this episode!
