AVRant #100: Disney Rant

October 30th, 2008

AV Rant from the Audioholics State of the CE Union Event at Disney. Dina couldn’t be there so it is Tom, Clint, and Gene (with a special appearance from his wife, Bertha) commenting on the first half day of the show. Pioneer, Emotiva, Epson, Trinnov, SVS, EMP, and more are covered. Clint sat in on some of the training seminars and reports. Gene on amp measurements. Listen in next time for more on the show. Expect more from Tom and Dina (especially on the costume party) next week. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

I might actually vote for myself

Nice overview podcast. I’ll be looking forward to more articles and coverage of the event.

One thing I’d really love to see Audioholics do would be a “shoot out” of sorts of the various “auto room correction” and “dynamic volume” programs that are out there now.

In particular, not a lot of noise has been made about Emotiva’s new processor. I find that rather surprising since it appears that the UMC-1 will be a remarkable product in that it brings a fully featured, genuine pre/pro to an uncommonly low price point.

Included in that UMC-1 though are two new versions of these “auto room correction” and “dynamic volume” programs with “Emo-Q” and “Dolby Volume”. Again, I’m rather surprised that more noise hasn’t been made about these programs being included in the UMC-1.

From the information I’ve gleaned from the Emotiva website and their own podcasts, it seems as though the “Emo-Q” auto calibration is a specially modified version of Cirrus’ program. So I’d love to have a really in-depth “shoot out” comparison between this new “Emo-Q” and perhaps the Audyssey and Trinnov programs.

Emotiva’s staff also made mention that they chose “Dolby Volume” because, in their experience, it performed better than Audyssey’s Dynamic Volume. So I’d love to see Audioholics do a comparison of those as well. I’d also love to see THX Loudness Plus included in that “shoot out”.

Rob – I missed this comment so sorry for the late reply.

I’d like to see this as well. One of the reasons why I haven’t been talking about the Emo processor is because I’ve been almost completely in the dark about it. Details are sketchy and coming mostly from Emotiva’s website/forum. Believe me, I’ll be excited to see what they have in store. A comparison is not out of the question since soon both Gene and Clint will have the Audyssey’s solution in their rooms (hopefully me too but no plans yet). We’ll see what turns up.
