AVRant #120: Rock Workout
Ted finally gets his due. Don’t worry Ted, regardless of the results of the poll, we love your stuff. Very cool. A long bit about the THX video calibration certification training. A review that Tom thought was funny but no one else is probably going to get. What the heck is Dolby ProLogic IIz anyhow? SciFi gets a new name – sort of. A new music game is due out this summer, Dina can’t wait. Check below for the video – first ever. Not the greatest quality but we’re working on it. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

Here’s our first attempt at video. We’re having some audio dropouts (sorry about that) but it isn’t bad. These videos are unedited and may contain strong language (not this one but in the future) and bad lighting. This is a work in progress.
Thanks, guys =)
Oh wow Tom you look nothing like the CEDIA video. You look like some dangerous weird guy who would bomb a place or something Dina looks good I must say. Good job on the video, I can only imagine that it must of taken a lot of work and frustration to get to this point. But it looks good.
Wadia be damned!
Xtreme ipods from MSB the for $2K and up.

“Worried about high-resolution music? The 176.4 kHz upsampling upgrade is now available for the iLink. The sonic improvement will range from stunning to unbelievable depending on your DAC.”
Go figure!
Ack! Flash? Darn it all, iPhone! Why must you lack Flash capability? Come summer time, I know you will gain the magic that is cut & paste, but I need my Flash. Honestly.
Ted – You’re welcome. Thank you!
Raul – I’m not sure how to take that 😉
Lesser – OMG!!!! Awesome. And only $2k!
Rob – Sorry dude. I’ve got the original AVI file but it might take a while to download 🙂
New news, Ted started a facebook page. Check it out – http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=62544705994&ref=nf
Tom oh no no that was a Complement lol
Hey that ProLogic IIz, sound intringing, if they can do that right.
I think I watched about 6 minutes of the video before I couldn’t take it any more. That being said, I look forward to seeing the video after the bugs are worked out. I did like being able to see the iPod cable, which is where I could see a lot of use for the video part of the podcast. Especially when Tom is trying to explain different things on a receiver or source component.
Great effort though, and I’m up to podcast #79…almost caught up. Thanks again~
Chris
mperfct – I agree. It’s tough. We’ll keep working on it though and hopefully have a better product soon. I’m open to suggestions too guys if anyone has a better way than using ooVoo.
Raul – that’s a BIG if.
To be blunt, I don’t ever see DPL IIz taking off in most peoples’ homes. It’s hard enough getting people to buy and setup a 5.1 system. Unless they are knowledgable, most people don’t even place those speakers correctly. The front height speakers in a DPL IIz setup really have to be wall mounted. There are precious few speaker stands that would actually be tall enough. I suppose a bookcase might work, but you would need one on either side of the TV. I just think it will be too much extra hassle and cost for the masses. And without content written specifically for DPL IIz, by Dolby’s own admission, the effect is very subtle when simply engaging IIz mode with regular content. This, to me, is a solution looking for a problem and more or less just a way to try and spur the purchase of new receivers and an extra pair of speakers. Besides, if you set up even just a 5.1 system correctly, you already get height information because the surround speakers are supposed to be 2-3 feet above your head (even though many people mistakenly place them at seated ear level).
Oh, and I know Tom knows this, but ISF stands for Imaging Science Foundation 😉
Yes you can use my email gently for reminders and emergent news and such.
By the looks of the comments, it wasn’t my gear that crapped out that video. Keep tryin’ though, if Leo LaPorte can do it for, I think, thirty hours a week now, it should be possible to put together an hour or so on the “inexpensive”… I have absolutely no good advice for you on this, I am a user, not a creator. That sounds so nasty…
The DPL IIz thing is not going to fly. My wife thinks my six speaker surrounds setup is just a matching set of plant stands. A Paradigm R60ii tower on the ceiling is going to be a tough sell. And how about matching them across? Hanging 80lbs or more in the middle of our living room… I think I’ll stick with an older 606 it has enough HDMI for family room setup.
The other Tom
Loved the video!! Great to see you guys…more please.
I like the idea of DPL IIz, in fact I do want it to secede, but yes your right Rob, the masses they don’t even understand 5.1 that well, heck even I have my issues. I did convince my wife already of two extra high speakers IF THIS TAKES OFF. But one configuration I did not manage to convince my wife of, was the “Voice of God” center channel. The one place on the ceiling right in top of the setting position. She was like “what if you don’t install it right and if fall on one of us and kills us. I do see her point, like Tom im not that handy
I enjoyed the THX calibration talk. Tom: have you taken a look at the HCFR software? It’s free: http://www.homecinema-fr.com/ColorHCFR/index_en.php
And if you combine it with the i1 Dislay LT: http://www.amazon.com/Xrite-EODLT-X-Rite-Eye-One-Display/dp/B000CR78CE/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1237671691&sr=8-1
Then add the free blu-ray or HD DVD calibration disc:http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=948496 or if you need the standard def version of a calibration disc there’s get gray (costs $25):http://calibrate.tv/
Don’t get me wrong, the CalMan is supposed to be good stuff but if people are trying to get into it a little cheaper, I would encourage HCFR to start out.
I like the IIz I already have klipsch quintettes in place because of my yamaha presence capabilities which it does open up the front sound field nicely I just don`t like losing my surround back to have presence but the IIz allows for both to be on so I for one would like that capability also you do not need full range speakers for this so I don`t no where some of you think you need 80 lb speakers but hay go for it just use anchor bolts in the studs & a sturdy bracket . P.S. sorry for the way I communicant I do have a disability so please excuse my spelling & word structure………….Jeff
“O” I forgot to say love the stop action of your video cast it reminded me of my teen shroom day`s !!!!!
Hey Flamingeye, your typing is fine. Reading your comment I may have lead you astray, I am not the illustrious Tom Andry, but as my sign off suggests, I am another Tom. Same name, not the same greatness…
That Video suxs, I want my money back…
Another Tom
Man, who left the vacuum running in the video? Nice vid! it’s fun to watch Dina roll her eyes when Tom talks.
Dina, we bought the CSIS thing and Sarah (my wife) even thought it was pretty cool, but the video shows all. We are laughing because you appear to be just as interested as she is when I talk about this stuff. It’s alright though, I will just block out the images, keep listening and pretend that you really care.
Jeb
PS. She does listen to the podcast once in a while and thinks you guys are funny and do a good job.
OK Dina, listened to the rest of the podcast today and heard that your video was frozen. Then I was talking on skype (no video) tonight and realized that I was looking all over the room in the same way you were on the video and it had nothing to do with boredom for me even if it was my Mother in law. It was just weird to have the camera looking at me and have no visual interactivity. Really weird.
Jeb
kinge, I can see Tom in all his full movement glory in this week’s podcast, and (hopefully) I will seem a little more interested!
Preview – she fades at the end but she fakes it well in the beginning. Such a trooper that one. 🙂
So it’s cool to have a pocket knife, but only if its part of the THX swag bag eh? I seem to recall our femme fatale catching a huge ration of s**t for admitting to carrying a Leatherman-type multi-tool. Guess what’s good for the gander ain’t so good for the goose in “Rant-land”! 🙂
Welcome to my world, davemcsjr!
Thank`s tak9ca & yes I know it was not the “Tom” but another Tom anyway this is for the”TOM” yes you can email me especial if you can email me a pinup of Dina with her title scribbled at the bottom!!!
