AVRant #157: Sweet Talk
This week Tom and Dina address the impending Comcast squashing of Hulu (edit – the deal is now official), Tom’s progress on the Denon AVR-4310CI review, and a bit about Audyssey. How to know if your upconverting DVD player is any good without doing the research yourself. Soundbars or a real 5.1 system? A black box that does… nothing. Past the break – Jon’s chart of screen size percentage differences. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

From Jonathan – Here is a table describing the improvement in aggregate screen size from improvements in diagonal size. For small screen size changes, the percentage improvement is approximately 2/diagonal, so that each inch improvement on a 42 inch set adds about 5 percent to screen size.
The formula for screen size on a 16:9 set (assuming picture all the way to the edge) is 0.4273 x diag^2.
This can be derived from the Pythagorean equation (ax)^2 + (16/9 a x)^2 = x^2, where x is diagonal distance. a= .490261
Screensize = ax (16/9ax) = 16/9 a^2 x = 0.4273 x^2
dSize/dx = 0.8546x, and 1/Area dsize/dx = 2/x, as I said above, but it’s accurate only for fairly small screen increases
I, for one, love the small talk and chit chat at the beginning of each podcast! So don’t go thinking that every listener wants it to be all business and hard-hitting news :p Really, when else does Dina get to talk for any length of time? 😉
Hi Guys,
Here’s a good website for tv size comparison: displaywars.com
