AVRant #71: The Cooliest Blu-ray Player
Clint and Tom are going to reveal the super-secret Audioholics project soon. Tom sends a shout out to Lifelock. You guys ROCK! The duo discuss completely unrelated to audio police stories. DRM and piracy – no effect? What does this mean for Apple? Thanks Denon for being so cool. Tom and Clint ponder the reasons why you do the things you do. Grant wants to know if he should buy a PS3 or an upconverting Oppo (which cost about the same these days). How does the PS3 perform on the HQV tests? Jared wants to know the difference between the Dolby Digital in movies and games. Clint answers the question before Tom gets a chance to describe the question. Don’t worry, it’ll all make sense in the end… we hope. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

At the Denon press event, I was so pumped when they teased the “affordable” player. So then later in the presentation they say $749 or whatever the price is, and I am feeling like such an idiot for actually thinking “sub $400” in my head earlier…..
As for the PS3 noise, I’d say mine is just about the same as my 360 when it is going full steam. It is certainly louder than my Panasonic projector while playing a BD or in a game. However, if I am just in the Media Bar, or sometimes at the beginning of a movie, the fan isn’t full speed yet, and is actually pretty quiet. My home theater hardware has a lot of noisy things, if I think about it. Oh well, I guess I am used to it.
I know you expected this but, the PS3 is 10db quieter than the xbox 360 under idle and during bluray and DVD playback.
It does get louder during video game playback.
I could live with that. I’m not as concerned at fidelity during game. I guess if I was playing resident evil or something it might make more of a difference but not for Army of Two or Gears of War. As long as it is quiet during BR playback.
“I wear it as a hat, and dont hear it” …”I cant hear it! I cant hear it!” … lol yeah good stuff
