AVRant #77: It’s supposed to rattle
Tom got Lego Indy. A preliminary review. Denon Link cable is explained. Is Denon trying to be esoteric? The new “audiophile” look. The sad truth about most esoteric gear. A $5000 baby rattle. The gear that will make you want to set up a two-channel room. Alex has a question about Denon Link and whether or not it is worth the upgrade. Jarret has a speaker upgrade question. Should he buy a center? Clint heard the Axiom EP400 and was impressed. How to deal with neighbors that don’t like your sub. John has a question on bitrates. Tom and Clint answer it… kinda. What would it take to get Tom into a theater? A miracle probably. How to use an SPL meter. Tom is neurotic – about getting accurate measurements. Are SPL meters accurate for sub frequencies. Not really but they are systematically inaccurate. Rick has a question about 1080i deinterlacing. Clint sells out to Axiom. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

Regarding neighbors and subwoofers – I’m surprised that AVRant hasn’t made a bigger deal about decoupling! Devices like the Auralex GRAMMA are what I’m talking about and I believe they even got a mention on a previous podcast. In my experience, decoupling your subwoofer(s) makes a HUGE difference – not just to the sound that you hear in your room, but also for dramatically reducing the structure-borne resonance – which is what lets the sound “travel” to other rooms and bothers your neighbors much more than the air-borne transmission of the sound.
Just wanted to mention that, because for $50, the GRAMMA can greatly reduce neighbor complaints 😉
Man, I just listened to this podcast… I seriously sound like I was paid to talk about Axiom… Seriously, it would take more than a single golf shirt. It was just coincidental that I did a system review and wrote my swag article at around the same time…
Now, with that said… I really like the new Honda Accord… If someone at Honda or a car dealership has an extra one lying around for “review” I’d probably pimp it on AV Rant… lol.
…So where is the line between high end and Esoteric gear?
