Off Topic Podcast
October 30th, 2007
Dina and I were discussing the possibility of doing an Off Topic podcast where we would answer questions from our listeners about anything they wanted (within reason of course). If there is enough interest (and more importantly enough questions) we would do this as a “Tuesday” podcast and not in place of our normal podcast. Feel free to ask questions below or send them to me or Dina.

“where we would answer questions from our listeners about anything they wanted”
Can’t wait to see where this goes… 🙂
Well since it seems very quiet over here I guess I will start it off. I started a cooking thread over at AH a while ago so I will spur up some culinary passion here too what are your favorite foods both going out for and/or home cooked?
Tom is actually an amateur gourmet. He guides most of my eating decisions when we go out at the trade shows, though he doesn’t often get to pick the restaurants… I do pretty good when I’m not forced into a an establishment that features belly dancers. 🙂
I have heard that mentioned a few times in the podcasts by Tom so I am pretty interested. The lobster rant showed that a few people interested in audio are also interested in food. Also, the AH thread did pretty well and a few of the guys started trading recipes via PM. Pretty exciting and fun stuff.
Ohh I thought of another question for you guys: What was your first audio setup?
Sony DVD/CD player with headphones and a 20-inch RCA CRT TV.
OK, to be fair, before that I had one of those plastic all-in-one racked up systems on wheels that had the record player on top (with clear plastic lid) and a dual cassette player on the front (no CD player until I was 19).
I didn’t own a subwoofer until I was 25.
I had my 19″ CRT and a DVD player until I had a nice chunk of change saved up for an upgrade. First it was the TV then I realized that a big screen is nothing without speakers I started to upgraded everything. Now I am building some speakers and will be downgrading to two channel soon because I can’t afford the time or money to build the center or the subs I have planned, yet. In time I will re-upgrade my parts though.
This probably isn’t a topic for the “Off Topic Podcast, but wasn’t quite sure where to ask. So here goes..
I have a basic “newby” question about cables used in home theater. If a Coaxial Cable used to connect a cable provider to a DVR through miles of cable can get 200+ TV channels through it, why is there a need for HDMI, Component video/audio, Composite video/Audio, etc., cables between components that are usually only a few feet apart? Couldn’t the coaxial cable be used to connect to everything (if the manufacturer’s would agree to do it) if it can handle so much information. I sure I’m not understanding the capabilities of the coaxial cables.
