AV Rant #362: CES SARS

January 22nd, 2014 Comments off

Posting this podcast early is Tom’s way of stopping twice at the next stop sign. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, you’ve never driven with someone over 50. This week there is no news because of CES SARS. Tom and Rob still manage to talk for over an hour while Liz catches up on work. We’ll see her next week for sure. This week, more on Net Neutrality courtesy of listener Jonathan. We have more from Gary about video color gamut and big ugly dishes. Check out SatTalk for all your satellite talking needs. If they talk about lasers, Tom wants to know. Michael wants to know more about amplifier specs and how to interpret them. Austin wants our opinion on Pass Labs’ one-off VFET amps. Rob is excited about VR and Valve’s announcement that they are working with Oculus Rift. Gary recommends this iPad stand for your bathroom, Rob recommends these B-tech Speaker Wall Mounts, and Tom suggests you look up Attack on Titan on Netflix.

AVR #188: Giddy

July 9th, 2010 4 comments

It’s a simple but thoroughly “giddy” AV Rant, with Clint filling in for Tom and Dina taking part in her very… last… podcast… until she returns from a summer sabbatical, that is. It is finally revealed that Audioholics is now shooting a series of video reviews. And they look really really awesome! We discuss the new Hulu Plus service for $9.99/month. Will it, Netflix and an an OTA satellite replace cableTV? Clint thinks so.

Tom is indeed alive and well and has successfully circumnavigated the globe to Australia. We’re sure we’ll be hearing from him soon.

Oh, and HDMI is dead. It’s kicked the bucket, shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin’ choir invisible. It is an EX-technology. And a new gun in town, HDBaseT, is set to replace it. Why? Because it is infinitely more awesome, user-friendly and flexible… and it’s already endorsed by the likes of LG, Samsung and Sony Pictures. Trust us, it’s the bomb and you WANT it – we explain why in the podcast.

We would love to read your feedback in the comments or over at the AV Rant Facebook fan page! Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley. To see our (mostly) complete collection of show videos, click here. To get our iPhone app, visit the iTunes store. Read more…

Netflix 2.0 on Xbox LIVE

August 10th, 2009 4 comments

Netflix seems to be updating its interface on the new Xbox LIVE update coming tomorrow. Why I think this is significant is that it finally adds the ability to browse titles and add them to your queue sans PC… Currently, you have to leave the Xbox 360, pull up your desktop/laptop and add new titles to your queue. The Netflix interface on all current BD players, televisions and the Xbox 360 only allow you to watch the current queue. Read more…
