AV Rant #286: Tired and Cranky

May 15th, 2012

This week – early morning for one and a cold for another. It’s complaints from both sides of the pond. Onkyo brings you Dolby TrueHD as a download…for a price. You’ll also need one of their brand new receivers to make it work. Samsung has a new display that Liz thinks is overpriced but Tom is still excited about. Here’s a hint – OLED. The new ISP from New Zealand that Tom and Liz discuss has already shut down their new service. Looks like the Kiwis will have to use VPNs to get Pandora like the rest of us. But Global Mode would have been cool. This week in Netflix – does having your content on multiple sources devalue it? Dish Network thinks so. Tom and Liz weigh in. The HBO Go model and why Tom and Liz (and most of you) think it stinks. Tom gives a preview of his Pioneer SE-MJ591 Headphone review. At $300, they aren’t perfect, but they sound pretty awesome. Thanks for listening. Now, don't forget to:

    What is it about podcasters and eating on the air? No matter how quiet you think you are we can totally tell when someones munching whilst casting. (Liz…..) Not to be mean but still.. should have thought of that before we left the house. So love the podcast guys!!!
    Cheers, photopants.

      I was watching her the whole time. She ate nothing. Not sure what you heard.

    Well I’m pleased as punch about all the Mad Men and Breaking Bad mentions as of late ๐Ÿ˜€

    I know Breaking Bad wasn’t Tom’s cup o’ tea, unfortunately, but I think Mad Men might be more to Tom’s taste. Just a completely unique show with so many moments that would never appear on any other programme.

    I can’t believe Liz hasn’t watched both of these fantastic shows though! That must be remedied posthaste! At least Liz is a Community fan. That gives her a lot of leeway in my book ๐Ÿ˜€

    Now I just have to get more people watching Nikita! Somewhat surprisingly, Nikita got picked up for a full 22 episode 3rd season! So summer’s a good time to catch up on the spectacularly good 1st season, and the not quite as mind-blowingly good, but still very entertaining 2nd season ๐Ÿ˜‰

    But yeah, Liz…gotta get you caught up on Breaking Bad and Mad Men. Nothing else like either of them on TV ๐Ÿ™‚

    @Rob H.
    Oh I’ve watched Mad Men! I love it, especially the editing in this past season. We keep pausing and rewinding to watch great cuts from scene to scene. That’s not to mention the storylines!

    Yay! Well at least that’s one show off the check list ๐Ÿ˜€

    If you and Will are fans of good editing and the technical aspects of TV shows, then you’d LOVE Breaking Bad! There’s some really spectacular editing work being done on that show. There was one scene last season with Jesse shooting a gun that was just amazing in the way it was edited. Made a pistol sound like a machine gun, but it just totally worked, still made sense, and really got across the emotion and calamity of the scene in a brilliant way.

    Breaking Bad is a tough show to watch in rapid succession though. It’s so damn tense! I genuinely feel like a need at least a short break after each episode :p Then I want to re-watch the episode again before moving on to the next one ๐Ÿ˜€
