AV Rant #310: Discerning Buyers

October 30th, 2012

Daylight savings has changed the podcast time. We’ll see how Tom getting up at 6am will work in the long run. This week, Sharp has a new LCD TV with a screen that resists glare. By being like a moth eye. We’re not sure that’s the image they want buyers to have in their minds. Are you a discerning listener? Then Outlaw Audio has the stereo receiver for you. Are you excited about the new Microsoft Surface tablets? Tom is. Liz less so. Check out the Ars review here. Which leads us to Microsoft SmartGlass – we’ll have more to say on that soon as well. Oh yeah, and Apple had a few things to announce. Our reactions. Thanks for listening. Now, don't forget to:

Hi Tom and Liz. I’ve downloaded the smartglass app for android and it works awesome for navigation and some basic searches on the xbox. I was anticipating just a basic controller interface showing up on the phone but it’s actually much more intuitive that that. For a first showing, I’ve got to give microsoft huge props for even making this thing work with android phone at all. I think the huge addition will be the way that they are able to incorporate the second screen (think – a customized list of weapons in Halo or a list of spells in an RPG instead of memorizing buttons on a controller). I think what Microsoft has done is create something that will compete with the Wii U without developing a Wii U tablet controller. We’re going to be able to use our existing iPad/ Android tablets in the same way that the soon to launch Wii U is hoping to use that new giant 7 inch contoller.
