AV Rant #377: A Bit of Everything

April 9th, 2014

That’s right, this week it is a little bit of everything. We’ve got questions from Adrian about Blu Music Discs and Michael about shopping for a record player. Eliezer has some advice about how to ship to Puerto Rico more cheaply. Gary wants to know about OLED screens and what all those new specs and colors mean. Shannon has a shopping list and we have some suggestions. How do you fix a torn woofer? We let you know. Anand has some problems with Audyssey. Brad and Alex are having problems as well. We try to troubleshoot as much as we can. Bill wants to know what a phase plug is and how it compares to a traditional dust cap. Thanks for listening. Now, don't forget to:

Yes, I did realize after we had finished recording that I never went back to talk about what I thought of Dolby Atmos when I saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier! I shall speak on it next week. Though, in short, with this one particular movie at least, it didn’t exactly blow me away or anything :p

    AV Rant Listener Adrián —

Sent us a link describing Universal Music Group’s efforts to promote Blu-ray as a music-only, high resolution format.

What do you think? Will having an established install base of players make this a more popular format than SACD or DVD-Audio?

    AV Rant Listener Michael —

is interested in finding a good, entry-level turn table.

Rob H. suggesting reading through this very helpful WireCutter article. Aside from recommending the Audio Technica AT-LP120-USB most highly, it also has a ton of good information about vinyl records and turntable playback in general. So if our recent discussions have piqued your interest, this might be an affordable way to give vinyl a try for yourself!

That said, Rob and Tom are certainly not vinyl or turntable aficionados what-so-ever. So if you ARE a vinyl lover, and you have some better suggestions, please let us know in the comments below!

    AV Rant Listener Bradley —

really helped us out with a great suggestion! Last week, AV Rant Listener Michael was looking for a smartphone app or a web-based control solution that would allow him to use accessibility features while digging into the deeper menus of his AV Receiver.

Bradley let us know about DeRemote. It appears to only be for Apple iDevices at the moment, and it only controls Denon and Marantz Receivers (the Denon or Marantz unit needs to be connected to your home’s LAN, by the way). But it certainly looks promising. So our thanks to Bradley for letting us and Michael know about it!

    AV Rant Listener Bill —

wanted to know more about phase plugs and dust caps. What are they? How are they different? What’s their purpose?

Aside from Tom and Rob’s discussion on the podcast, Tom also found this informative forum thread over on the diyaudio forums. So check it out for more info!

    AV Rant Listener Shannon —

was hoping to find a way to repair his 20 year-old Sonance DL15 subwoofer, which has a tear in its driver.

Tom and Rob are sorry that we don’t have better suggestions to offer other than contacting Sonance directly, looking for used DL15s that could be stripped for parts, or just replacing the damaged DL15 altogether.

But one resource that Shannon could try would be the helpful forums over at parts-express. There’s a chance that a suitable drop-in replacement driver exists. And if it does, parts-express likely sells it. So it’s worth a try, at least
