AV Rant #939: Joe’s Spooky Season (Tom Update 2)
Joe Klusnick co-hosts with Rob H this week. He’s been catching up on spooky movies. And he tells the tale of how he acquired his latest high-end home theater goody! Tom provides a second update on how he and his family are doing. It’s some good news, and some bad news. And the Pathé Palace in Paris converted six of its seven theatres to MicroLED.

00:00:00 – Intro
Welcome back, Joe Klusnick. We’re changing up the order of our segments a little bit this week.
00:02:34 – Tom’s 2nd Update
Find out how Tom and his family are doing. There’s been some good news. There’s been some bad news.
00:48:39 – Tom Answers Tony’s Question!
We figured we can start to ease Tom back into answering home theater & AV questions, right? So last week, Tony wanted to know how Tom feels about Sony’s room correction and 360 Spatial Sound Mapping. And now we can hear it straight from Tom!
01:03:17 – Back to Joe & Rob
Thanks, once again, to https://www.anker.com/ for providing Tom with a Solix Portable Power Station, GaN Prime Power Banks, and other helpful items following the two hurricanes.
01:04:52 – Listeners of the Week
Our Listeners of the Week are Steven B, Kerry, and Chris H for their PayPal donations, plus our 133 Patreon Patrons, as well as Greg for offer to send Tom an Emotiva BasX A2m Stereo Flex Amp and/or a Fosi ZA3 amp; and, Infinite Gary for sending Tom a couple more movie codes.
We also appreciate the notes of gratitude for keeping the podcast going from: Gurinder, Greg, Robert, Miguel, and Karl. Thank you to everyone for continuing to listen!

01:11:49 – News: Pathé Palace Converts to MicroLED
Six out of the seven historic theatres now feature Samsung Onyx MicroLED displays after a 5-year renovation project: https://tinyurl.com/26ved7br
Comments:
01:15:07 – Comment: Matt & John – Lip Sync
A single setting in Matt’s Trinnov Altitude32 Pre-Pro was responsible for his lip sync issues. And John has narrowed down the cause of his lip sync problems to something that was done during a professional calibration.
01:23:27 – Comment: Infinite Gary – DirecTV Stream
1080p SDR quality seemed worse than cable, and they have the same blackout restrictions on sports, so Gary wasn’t impressed.
QUESTIONS:
01:27:32 – Paul: Should Reviews Mention Customer Service?
He had a fantastic customer service experience from SVS. Should professional reviews feature a section on how good or bad a company’s customer service is?
01:39:42 – Henry: Back Wall Treatments
He cannot mount thick acoustic treatments on the doors in his back wall. So what should he put on them?
01:44:45 – Mohsen: Case-by-case Picture Settings?
Spears & Munsil’s Benchmark disc got him to adjust his settings one way. But some shows look too dark. What can be done?
01:51:10 – Adriano: Which 83″ OLED?
The LG C4 and Samsung S90D are the same price. Does one have an obvious advantage over the other?
01:56:37 – Robert: More Treatments & Wireless Atmos
He followed our acoustic treatment advice to a tee. But would he benefit from adding even more? And since he doesn’t want to touch his ceiling, is there a truly wireless Atmos speaker solution for him?

02:10:58 – Miguel: Reference Quality Audio
When people say a given disc is “reference quality”, what does that even mean? Especially regarding the audio?
02:20:22 – How Joe Got His NZ9
Joe regales us with the tale of how he bought his JVC NZ9 projector, and several other home theater items, for a steal of a price.
02:28:39 – What We Watched
Putting this segment at the end for a change.
Rob watched The Penguin Ep.6, and the first two episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks S.5. He also watched Abigail so he could talk about it with Joe.
Joe watched: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, The Menu, Immaculate, Abigail, Longlegs, M3GAN, The Blob (1988), The Haunting (1999), The Black Phone, Final Girls, and Christine.
