AV Rant #980: What’s Next?

August 14th, 2025

Skydance’s purchase of Paramount is complete, creating Paramount, a Skydance Corporation. Disney now owns all of Hulu and will merge it into a single app with Disney+ in all territories. JTR Kallos Series speakers bring their high-sensitivity, high-power-handling designs to slim on-walls that look nicer in a Living Room. And we review The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Happy Gilmore 2.

In the news:

00:34:16 – News: Paramount, a Skydance Corporation

Skydance’s purchase of Paramount has been finalized: https://tinyurl.com/hnchy444

00:34:51 – News: Hulu & Disney+ in a Single App

Disney now owns all of Hulu, so it will merge Hulu and Disney+ into a single app, and replace Star with Hulu outside of the USA: https://tinyurl.com/49x4z4yk

00:36:00 – News: JTR Kallos Series Speakers

They still have high sensitivity and power handling, but nicer finish options and a slim, wall-mountable design make the new JTR Kallos Series more suitable for Living Rooms: https://www.jtrspeakers.com/home-entertainment

Comments:

00:41:55 – Comment: SegaMasterSystm – TASCAM BD-MP4K

There’s another Ultra HD Blu-ray player out there that is rarely ever mentioned, and it has rack ears: https://tinyurl.com/m5rb8pne

00:45:38 – Comment: Karl – Talk to Theater Owners

He mentioned a problem at his local IMAX, and they followed up with thorough details.

00:46:44 – Comment: Stefan – Cable Purchases

He bought the RUIPRO detachable fiber optic HDMI cable, THSUCORDS slim HDMI cables, and Locking Banana Plugs we recommended.

QUESTIONS:

00:48:21 – Chris: Image Cropping & Overscan

His new TV was cropping off the progress bar of his Apple TV 4K. Turning off overscan fixed it at first, but then it happened again.

00:57:15 – William: Epson LS9000 Replaces 4050 not 6050UB

The new Epson LS9000 has lower native panel contrast than the 6050UB or LS12000. So some argue it’s actually a 4050 replacement.

01:06:45 – Mark: Time for New Amplifiers?

His 3-channel Proceed Amp has problems. His 2-channel amp is still fine. Should he do a repair, replace just the 3-ch amp, or get a new 5-channel amp and replace everything?

01:17:06 – Infinite Gary: IMAX Enhanced & Bigger Screen

A Residential Systems article by Anthony Grimani says IMAX Enhanced could help installers to sell more services to existing clients. Is it honestly compelling? And if he makes his projection screen a lot bigger, will the image look less sharp?

– IMAX Enhanced Article: https://tinyurl.com/3z44mw7m

01:21:48 – Brian: Surround Placement & Receiver Choice

How should he configure his new Living Room? Where should the Surround speakers go? And which AV Receiver should he buy?

01:32:45 – Paul: Rockwool on the Ceiling

Rather than painting his ceiling, should he cover it with Rockwool insulation and cover that with fabric? How much absorption is best?

01:35:11 – John: Spikes & Audyssey

Should he use the spike feet that came with his new Tower speakers? Should he re-run Audyssey?

01:39:10 – Sasi: Earbuds, Subs, Z-weighting & SoundBars

Are there wireless earbuds with a really good microphone that don’t rely on Bluetooth? Is an SVS SB-1000 Pro actually better than KEF’s dual-opposed micro subs? What’s the deal with A, C, and Z-weighting? Does the Canvas HiFi Bacch3D SoundBar make sense? And what’s the market for KEF’s new XIO SoundBar?
