AVRant #128: Tom’s Going to Jail
Clint fills in for Dina this week. Look for a new contest of sorts on the website on Friday. Tom got his PS3 (yea!) and a new Xbox (double yea!) on the same day (mind-blowingly yea!). First impressions of the PS3 – smug. That’s right, he said it. A few comments from the Midwest. A dead Belkin Powerline AV+ means you’ll have some more info on customer support soon. Denon’s got a new line of AVRs (receivers) and Blu-ray players with LOTS of acronyms. Tom’s thinking about finally getting some blackout curtains (he ordered them and will share the link if they don’t suck), Clint gives some advice. Why Tom thinks J.J. Abrams is smarter than Joss Whedon. And yes, that is a snowball in hell. Tom is going to jail and so is Dina. An exceptional deal from the Audioholics store contained within. Check it out. The phone line is back and working, give us a ring at 978.633.7268. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

So, Tom, you actually stuck with Dollhouse through the entire season, eh? I gave up on that show pretty quickly and really only stayed as long as I did because it was Joss Whedon. It bothers me that Dollhouse has a better chance of coming back next season than Sarah Connor Chronicles, which is an infinitely better show!
Arrgh…just saw the update the Dollhouse has officially been renewed for next season! Which almost certainly means that Terminator will be cancelled 🙁
Curses!
You need to work on your accent recognition. I know those $.50 headsets that come with Xboxes are bad, but my accent is full on eastern Tennessee twang combined with maybe a decade of Nashville. 🙂
Thanks for the game of Horde. Sorry for the glitch going on where I couldn’t even see when you were down…
Rob, I really hope Sarah Connor stays. But like you said, it’s looking scary. I watch both, but Sarah Connor is the better written show and I really want to see what they set up in the last episode happen.
Here’s a good link to see what’s renewed and isn’t that stays updated:

Tom, it will be interesting to hear your take on Star Trek. It was a good movie even with the huge plot holes you could drive a space ship through.
As long as the North American version is equally accurate, it looks as though Pioneer leaving the plasma business is not the end of the world as some of us had feared!
Well done, Panasonic!

I feel bad expressing my opinion of Star Trek because, overall, I enjoyed it, but whenever I talk about it, I can’t help but mention the many things that I did not like! It’s a case where no one complaint is so strong that it ruined my enjoyment. But when I list so many small complaints, it winds up sounding so much worse!
Darn it all! Sarah Connor Chronicles is cancelled 🙁 Can we PLEASE trade crappy Dollhouse to get Terminator back?
poop.
this is poop.
If Chuck gets cancelled too, that is really going to suck!
Only bright spots are knowing that The Big Bang Theory and Breaking Bad are safe 🙂
ahhh…Breaking Bad. Good Gravy that show is great!
Chuck is safe – link
Kept Doll House but cancelled Sarah Connor? Makes no sense but not a big surprise for the morons in Follywood.
Saw Star Trek Sunday and was very impressed. Enjoyed it thoroughly. I was not trying to match it to any other movie/show though I wanted some sort of basic matching with the main characters and I think they did a fine job. I really liked the alternate reality methodology…made it a lot easier to write I imagine. My wife and I waited over 4 hours 30 some odd years ago, in the pouring rain…no kidding…,to see Star Trek The Movie. This time we just walked in and got great seats. Whew, wife was giving me the “I’m not waiting in any more freakin’ lines” eye lol.
And most important of all. My “leetle girl” graduated from Bryant University Saturday…Magna Cum Laude, National Honor Society and 4.0gpa…Magna was based on fall semester not final grade…ah well. Wife and I are very proud and don’t mind sharing lol…Perhaps best news is she also has an awesome job as well.
Love the podcast.
Kai
Did Rob really just type the word “poop”? How un-verbose of you, Rob! 🙂
Tom, on the “smug” PS3, when you select 1080P you get the menues in 1080P/60 which is a much higher data rate than 1080P/24. You can tell the PS3 to do menues in 1080i and display Blu-ray in 1080P/24 under the video menu. I had the same problem when I upgraded my display to 1080P. I went in and told the PS3 to autodetect. It gave me 1080P but I got sparkles. In my case it was the old DVI cable with HDMI adapters on both ends I was using. A trip to monoprice fixed that. Even still all you get in 1080P/60 are the menus since almost all the PS3 games run at 720P.
Kai – congrats for your daughter. That’s awesome.
Nelson – Yeah, this is just a first generation 1080p set problem. Not to worry, I’ll be upgrading to a projector soon. Right Clint? Clint?….
Gotcha, tom. I guess my real point is if your display will do 1080P/24 you aren’t missing anything by having the PS3 set to 1080i unless you happen to have one of the few PS3 games that output 1080P (was there another besides NBA 07?).
OK, so I can answer my own question:

O crap I would have gone to jail when I was harasing that guy on the forums not to long ago, and then Tom came to the recue. Thanks Tom!! lol
