AVRant #131: Going to the Movies

June 4th, 2009

There is no video this week because ooVoo hates us. I can’t believe we’re paying for this service. We’ll try one more week and if we can’t figure it out, it’s gone. Tom and Dina both went to the movies (not together). He saw Star Trek and Dina saw Up in 3D. Both report. Why does Speed Racer suck on Blu-ray? No, it isn’t the subject matter. New firmware out for Yamaha receivers. A cool new deal. Dina talks about the guest co-host auditions – look for an announcement soon. Tom reviews a pair of $6000 bookshelves. What does he think? Get the preview. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to composite triple beatvote for us at Podcast Alley.

Tom, Did you go to the new Carmike in Fleming Island?

    • June 5th, 2009 at 14:54 | #2

Alex – Yes, that’s the one.

Andy – Opps, sorry. I guess I just assume that I have one fan of each name… except Jonathan of course 🙂

I’m the Andy you played Gears with last weekend, but I’m not the Andy that sent an audition 🙂 I was trying to tell you that during our game, but there were too many people talking…

As a Wii owner from the Midwest (Chicago), I’m offended by the notion that I cannot program, let alone own, a VCR. It is Beta or nothing for me. Speaking of Beta, the Oppo BDP-83 is not a universal player, it doesn’t play Laserdisk!

Ok seriously now, I know I’ve commented on this before but I love my Wii. I’m currently working my way through Resident Evil 4 and after that I will be picking up Madworld (Wii exclusive 3rd party title) , which is supposed to be awesome.

And a word about Natal. I read the name before listening to the podcast and thought it was M$ making fun of Nintendo. I was thinking of natal as in baby, pre-natal care, and though M$ was calling motion control a childish concept.

I plan to see Up this coming Wednesday or Thursday (I’m loving the 11:30 am and 12 noon showings with all of 10 other people in the whole theatre!) I’m looking forward to it, but I’m just hoping it’s still in the 3D DLP theatre when I go! Most of the cineplexes around here only have one digital theatre out of 18 or so screens and movies are basically in there for one week and then they’re gone! If stupid Land of the Lost bumps Up out, I’m gonna be perturbed 🙁

As to where I sit in the theatre, I’m just like Tom: 1/3rd from the back wall. Tom didn’t say it, but that is typically the position at which the acoustics are best! 😉

Which reminds me, Tom, do you recall the episode of The Big Bang Theory in which they went to the movies? I literally laughed out loud as Sheldon moved around the theatre making whooping and clapping noises in order to find the most acoustically ideal seat! The only thing that could have made that scene better is if he had pulled out an SPL meter! 😀

I’m curious to know more about those $6000 Snell speakers. I’m even more curious to know how “value” speakers such as the Emotiva ERM-1 or Ascend Sierra-1 compare! Tom said he had never heard speakers quite as good as the Snells. Does that apply to even Gene’s massive RBH towers?!

Glad I could put Dina’s mind at ease regarding my speaking ability :p Although, if she were to actually see me in person, she might be compelled to verbally assult me since I’m rather short 😮

    😀

Rob – I actually didn’t even both a/b’ing them with the Emotivas – it wasn’t going to be a fair fight. As far as the RBH/Snell comparison… I believe I said I had never heard a better speaker in my room. I’m not about to try to compare gene’s speakers in gene’s room to speakers in my room.

I think the “French” name Dina is referring to is Kobayashi Maru. I know, lobbing that one over the plate for Tom.

If you really like the Snell’s, there’s a very similar option in kit form at Madisound called the Odin. Very similar speaker, although a little larger, with 7″ midbass drivers, instead of the Snell’s 5″. Also designed by Joe D’Appolito using basically the same drivers.

    Tom,

You did not like Wall-E? And you have a Westinghouse TV? Double negative in this one. Never admit those two things if you want to be taken seriously.

    Tom,
Emotiva speakers came to my mind also as your oral description made them sound similar in design. You also had made the same sort of comments in your review of the erm-1, ie. exceptionally flat in your room. I don’t think we want you to throw them in the ring together but I am awfully curious what sort of differences 6k can make in a box that is pretty similar.
