AVRant #147: Cyborg

October 1st, 2009

This week Tom and Dina talk about Starbucks, Natal, and the Beatles. UPS really did one on John. Akamai HD looks to be pretty interesting – check it out if you haven’t already. Tom is going to be on the HT Guys – next week (not this one like he thought). A receiver you want but shouldn’t have. A bit about Tom’s upcoming Axiom M0 review. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

added a link to the UPS damage above. Check it out. UPS apparently hates Infinity Betas.

Jeez, poor John! That, right there, is the reason I avoided importing my KRP-600M Kuro plasma! The price in the US was considerably lower, but the cost of shipping one to Canada made it almost equal. The dread and fear of shipping a known-to-be-very-fragile 60″ plasma just made the whole thing a no-go for me! If UPS can do that to a speaker, just imagine what they’d do to a fragile glass plasma screen! 😮

    Speaking of plasmas…

I’m sure Tom knew this and was just rushing his words, but that 3D Panasonic display is actually a 50″ plasma and not an LCD. Also, the glasses used with Panasonic’s 3D plasma are the shutter-type, and not polarized.

The shutter type glasses need battery power. They receive an infra-red signal from the television and actively turn on and off – effectively blocking one eye’s view at a time.

It’s a more expensive method of creating the illusion of 3D, but it is also supposed to be more effective. Most of all, it works better if you are sitting off to the side than the polarized version of 3D. This is a pretty big concern in an average living room, so the shutter-type glasses make sense 🙂

Dang, that sucks. I hate it when I am looking forward to something (i.e. any technical purchase), and it shows up damaged. I’ve never had something get that jacked before, though.
