AVRant #46: Fly-overs

February 28th, 2008

AV Rant HD DVD poll results are revealed and discussed. Mac people are used to disappointment. Tom’s OCD and the AV Rant website makes it worse. Tom gives a quick update to his Comcast Cable HD issues. So far – it isn’t looking good. Listen in to the laundry list of lies. AV Rant is getting used for research. Tom and Dina discuss. How do you balance music and home theater when buying speakers? Tom gives his opinion. Where do you listen to music (visit AV Rant to take the poll)? Tom is a survey snob. Is the WAF (wife acceptance factor) still a big deal? HGTV is not helping the cause of good sound in home theater. We have a guess on the secret Audioholics project. What kind of music would make Tom run out and buy it right now? Feel free to make some suggestions. Tom talks about the demographics of you, the AV Rant listener. Here’s the link for Clint’s HDMI article. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

With the talk about HD-DVD being dead, I thought it would be nice to look back at an article about how much better VHS is than DVD.

That is an awesome post. Simply awesome. I hope that’s not me down the road in the event that Blu-ray takes over the world…

A few thoughts from the podcast

-Tom, thanks for introducing me to ytcracker’s NES album off of your imeem account I found after the Imeem vs. Pandora podcast. I listened to it for a week straight enjoying it and trying to figure out what games the music was from. I agree that the spamtec song you have now is more fitting then meganerd (maybe if this was a gaming podcast), although meganerd is an awesome song.
-WAF still is a big factor for me. I have upgraded from RBH’s smaller CT series to regular bookshelfs and have a semi-large Hsu sub so my wife has worked with me considering it is our family room and HT. But when I mention room treatments I get the “over my dead body” look. I even showed her some of the better looking panels and she just laughed, I tried to explain how they would work and she just laughed harder.
-Looking at the current results of the AV Rant poll (office music listening) and J posting his review of the Klipsch earphones could you guy discuss head/earphones on one of your podcasts? I spent some time looking for some new IEM and found it difficult to find reliable information on the different brands and performance. For the price I paid for my new IEM I can’t complain but I keep looking at the Shure SE’s thinking the foam ear pieces would be more comfortable and better at sound isolation than the silicone pieces I have now.
-I know music choice is personal but a DVD-A disc I recently picked up and have found enjoyable is Linkin Park’s Reanimation. Good mix, good sound, good bass.
-Are the Blue-ray music discs concerts? Or are they high-rez audio? Are more scheduled to be released any time soon?

    fox –

    1) You’re welcome.

    2) Not surprised. I’m telling you, start watching HGTV with her religiously and wait until someone paints a blue “accent” square on the wall and then suggest that an acoustical panel could be the same thing. It’s your best shot IMO.

    3) J’s with me on Tuesday so expect some earphone discussion. Great topic!

    4) I’ve actually been eying that Linkin Park DVD-A. Thanks for the suggestion.

    5) Blu-ray – you got me. It’s on my short list to figure out though. Expect more talk on this soon.

Cliff – Nice article. There is a lot of truth there (for the time) behind all the “DVD sucks” rhetoric. Really, though, only a fool thinks that VHS and DVD looks the same. From moment one on a 27″ JVC I could tell the difference. It was night and day. Of course I question the use of the results of any study that required someone to watch “Big Mama’s House” 😉 . And anyone that thinks that VHS tapes are “virtually impossible to destroy” just isn’t trying.

I like the ytcracker song. To be fair, it’s really not about gaming specificlly. It’s about all things nerdy(aka everything I love).

Cool! I was looking that up last night. Really Dave Matthews and NIN are the two that look any good to me. I’m hoping we see more and more of this in the future. These uncompressed audio formats are very exciting and hopefully the musicians see it that way as well.

I’m glad to see concert videos coming out on Blu-ray. I think that the retail CD should all but be obsoleted. Let the portable music realm be given to MP3 and downloads and have the music industry go back to its roots: Good quality high-definition audio.

Tom, the jets overhead during the podcast were courtesy of Michael Bay. You were supposed to run out into the yard and point up as they flew over.

I literally fell out of my chair laughing. Caper – best first comment ever.
