AVRant #54: Tom’s Voice

March 27th, 2008

Tom’s voice is going and gets worse as the podcast progresses. This is probably going to be a yearly phenomenon. Tom reveals that he is a born geek. Who knew? Dina reveals a deep secret about her mom. Tom makes up a new food guaranteed to kill you. Tom’s a very proud parent. Tom had an “out of phase” experience. How long were you in this hobby before you learned that the room makes a difference in how your system sounds? How long does it take for an esoteric reviewer to figure this out? You’d be surprised. Tom’s system has never sounded so good. A brief overview of how a parametric EQ works. How to set up a subwoofer. Jack Thompson is a psychopath. Rich people need to buy quality, not brand name. Tom thinks if you’re going to do HD, you need to do it right. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

Now you have me creeped out. Your voice and mine sound alike. I am concerned that Dina’s Mom might be after me too!

Vosges Chocolates has bacon chocolate bar – “Mo’s Bacon Bar”. I’ve had it, it’s darn tasty. (In an odd coincidence I also know the Mo it’s named after).

    Re: Emotiva ERM-1 Speakers…
Tom’s really going for a streak.

Turning a speaker with only front facing drivers upside down does not change the PHASE of the speaker because the drivers still go IN and OUT in the same order. The only way that phase would be affected is if one speaker was facing backwards and the other one forwards.

With stereo sources, I can tell quite easily when speakers are out of phase, I can’t see how Tom could not notice. Maybe the Emotiva’s drivers were wired up incorrectly at the factory. To me, out of phase speakers sound un-naturally airy with a really dispersed sound that I can’t quite locate the source in my mind. (That’s probably why some pairs of surround sound speakers are wired out of phase on purpose.)

Oh btw, I have only done two posts both critical of the rant, definitely not intended… I really enjoy the podcast and the good information it provides.

PS Dina, keep up the Tom bashing 🙂

Well, in all fairness, Tom’s not an idiot, lol. He was just talking about the fact that when he rotated the speakers upside down the red and white were reversed. He wasn’t wiring them out of phase, just noting that as he picked up the cable, he had to flip it over for the TK’s vs. the Emotiva’s. He then later talks about purposefully wiring them out of phase to listen to them.

With those emo’s there’s not much bass response, and with him blasting multi-channel music I’m not too surprised it wasn’t heard instantly, especially since he wasn’t listening for it. As he said, once it went to stereo it was easily and instantly distinguishable.

So, this doesn’t truly qualify as a strike two – though I think we should give away prizes for catching him in mistakes, lol. Keep listening!

Speaking of room interaction and Tom’s mistakes (from previous episodes): Who wants to look into a properly set up omnipolar speaker and listener preference in reference to Toole’s research? 😉

I voted for “shooter” in the poll because “Silent Hill” wasn’t a category.

Ah… Tom was ranting about having to move the banana plugs from left to right and right to left to keep the colors matched up… the hard life of an audio reviewer. 😉 My bad. Sorry about that.

I *did* say in my original post that since it’s pretty easy hear if speakers were out of phase, so it may be because the drivers were hooked up out of phase from the factory… (this actually happened to somebody I know with the factory speakers in his car!!)
    So I really don’t think Tom’s a complete idiot. :-O
