AVRant #76: What’s next for HDMI
Clint stands in for Dina who is out on vacation. Tom saw Beowulf and was… under whelmed. It was a big “why bother” in his opinion. Is 3D doomed to be a gimmick? Only time will tell. Many manufacturers are coming out with a new “glasses free” 3D display. What are Tom and Clint looking for out of this display? Tom has a Star Trek moment. AV manufacturers need to learn how to name their gear. How do you make a good display look bad? Settings, settings, settings. How to see the difference between “good” and “bad” black definition. A word of advice for when you are calibrating a display. Poor Clint doesn’t have enough swag. Waa. A new contest is announced – and you’ve got multiple chances to enter. Keep an eye on our prize list for changes. John wants to know what is next for HDMI. Photonic storage – the next disc? Clint just wants things to work. Maybe Steve Jobs is the answer. Alexandre has a question about receivers – mostly because he’s been listening to forum trolls. Is the ability to update firmware a good thing or bad thing? You guys talked briefly about new storage. I work in IT and we just brought in for demo a Laptop with a solid state hard drive. Beside the geeky cool factor it was fast. Turned the pc on it went through its post proccess then pretty much imediatly it asks you to login then a couple seconds later you are logged in and all the system try icons are up and the pc is ready to start using.
What i want is some form of solid state. no moving parts, no disk to scratch (USB 3, next version of firewire, or some other technology)
I am ALL about solid state drives. Why it’s still expensive is beyond me, though I understand it’s still an evolving technology. The day my laptop can get to the Desktop in less than 10-15 seconds I’ll be ecstatic.
Just a quick comment about Clint’s comment that people on forums shouldn’t comment unless they own the gear. I think that is overshooting the mark a bit, don’t you? :p I get what you’re saying – you should at least have experience with actually using the gear, but owning it? That seems a little much. If you really go by that requirement, then we couldn’t read any professional reviews – including the ones on Audioholics! Sure, you guys use them and test them and spend a lot of time with them, but you don’t OWN them…so yeah…that’s going a little too far :p
Fair enough. Let’s agree to exclude people who have extensive experience hanging out in retail stores or friends’ houses using the devices for hours and hours.
It’s the same result, however. The people we’re talking about have never used the device being discussed for more than 5 minutes – if that.
I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, but I think you are both wrong.
lol – yeah, I was just poking a little fun there 😀 I totally get what you really meant about some of the people on forums who just read one comment about some “problem” and all of a sudden, there are 100 posts about that piece of gear suddenly being “crap”. Sort of takes on a life of its own! Heck, there was a whole backlash against the excellent Pioneer Kuro plasma TVs because some people were hearing a buzzing sound :p Nevermind that many of those people had their TV plugged into the same electrical circuit as their lights! :p

No matter what the thread starts out to be, it will always end up turning into a bashing of the manufacturers. But then again, without internet forums we’d actually have to hold conversations with our spouses where we are GUARANTEED to lose all arguments. It’s so much easier to call the guy on the other side of the computer wrong 🙂
(Now let me get back to the forum. I forgot to tell this guys over there he’s an a-hole)
