AV Rant #331: Running Wires

June 21st, 2013 Comments off

This week, there is a lot to talk about (the Xbox One turnaround hadn’t happened yet – we’ll get to that next week). Google Loon – a project just so crazy…well, it’s just so crazy. But BALLOONS! Yea! Who doesn’t like them? What is Oculus Rift? Would it make a good name for a child? Tom thinks so. Which is why Tom is not allowed to name children. ESPN 3D falls down, goes BOOM! To the surprise of, well, no one, really. Though if 3D was going to take off, sports seemed to be the best bet. The new VIZIO 80″ M-Series display is out. And it is less that $4000 (a penny less, but that’s less). Ford is taking a step back while Apple takes a step forward. This week in Netflix – is original content the way of the future or not? We discuss this (and this) article from listener Jonathan. Tom says a very special thank you to all that have donated. We often talk about running wires behind baseboards and molding. But how does that work exactly? Tom tells all.

AV Rant #329: Planning a Home Theater Screen and Seating

June 7th, 2013 Comments off

Liz is very busy and can’t make the podcast this week. Rob gets unfired for one more week and steps in. Rob is dying to talk to Tom about his new home theater screen and the proper size. Check out Seymour AV for their screen types and offerings. Here is the one that Tom was talking about with the manual masking system. There is a price tag on the new IMAX home theater. If you aren’t already on the waiting list, you’ll have to spend your $2 million on something else. Rob has a few comments on the Joe Kane interview over at the Home Theater Geeks podcast which leads into a discussion of why our displays still don’t match what they are using for movies. CNET is now listing Lag as a statistic. An important thing to know if you are buying a display primarily to be used for gaming. Is the Atari ET game landfill a reality or an urban legend? We’re about to find out.

AV Rant #321: We’re Back!

April 10th, 2013 Comments off

Yep, we’re back and all your questions will be answered. Tom and Liz discuss all the new watches that are either coming out (like the Pebble), or being talked about. What do you think? Will watches be the new thing? Sony (surprisingly) comes out with the first “affordable” 4k displays. You might not buy one but we’re betting you know someone that will. Liz isn’t sure about this new Facebook Home wrapper for your phone. Do we really need more Facebook? A question from Luis about hiding wires or going wireless. Big changes to the podcast coming soon. We’re anxious to hear your input. Start sending your questions in.

AV Rant#319: Happy New Year!

January 1st, 2013 2 comments

This week, Lee Overstreet guest co-hosts with Liz over the holiday weekend. We discuss favorite new Christmas presents (Lee got a printer, Liz’s family got tablets). LG is offering a new TV line with embedded Google TV. Lee thinks Apple will be forced to reinvent the internet-connected television. Liz thinks the Houston Texans are in a Richard-measuring contest with the Dallas Cowboys, and really loves 3D printing technology, especially when it can print LPs.Lee gives an in-depth look at his 2012 and 2013 projects — archiving and sharing home media — Cassettes, records, VHS, you name it.

AV Rant #314: Processors

November 28th, 2012 Comments off

Liz found a retro TV that she sort of loves. Tom thinks it would be a better screen saver. Check out the Kuba Komet here. The House of Cards trailer surprises both Tom and Liz as being something that they are actually interested in. If you have $25,000 to spend on a TV, do you really need an incentive to buy? Sony promises free 4k “delivery solution” loaded with full length 4k movies with every purchase. Get out those checkbooks. The Roku/3M streaming portable projector gets a review. Tom and Liz weigh in. Tom helps a friend shop for a processor. A comparison of the Emotiva UMC-200  and Outlaw Audio Model 975 processors. Very different processors for very different consumers. Both priced under $600. Tom makes his big announcement.
