AV Rant #299: Olympic Pole Dancing

August 14th, 2012 2 comments

Yes, we went there though, in Tom’s defense, Liz led the way. Tom found a bunch of funny (gernerally NSFW for language reasons) videos this week including Boats, Bane vs Cable Guys, and Batman, Call Me Maybe. Note: the discussion of the Bane videos does lead to spoilers so be warned. 3D printers can build you a gun or a house. We choose house since there is no assembly required. Is allowing your music/content to be used in commercials “selling out”? Beastie Boys’ MCA thought so enough to ban it in his will. Experts weigh in on speaker placement and Tom predicts without having read the article (really, he didn’t). Tom talks about the new V-MODA Faders review he’s working on (tuned earplugs) and Logitech’s new TV Cam HD (which he thinks is lame but Liz doesn’t agree – what do you think?).

AV Rant #296: Bluetooth vs AirPlay

July 25th, 2012 3 comments

Welcome to the podcast that is sometimes not boring. This week, Tom discusses the quality of Bluetooth and Apple’s AirPlay. Feel free to correct him if his Google-fu let him down. A big thank you to listener Jason for his killer Mee Goreng recipe. It was yummy. Tom talks about Fannys and Wangs (the headphones). We honestly can’t believe neither of those words ended up in the title of this podcast. Over the Ear Wangs? Come on! Liz finds audiophiles like to mix reality and big bags of crazy. Welcome to upselling vibration dampening. GameDock and iCade prove to Tom that his theory that mobile devices will someday replace your computer is coming. Also, a prediction about Kickstarter and other such services. OUYA – a $100 game console based on Android that is completely open sourced. Sunfire’s HRSIW8 in-wall sub. Every one sold is proof positive that the Internet is too hard for some people.

AV Rant #291: Contests, Lozenges, and Oatmeal

June 19th, 2012 Comments off

Tom is getting sick and Liz is getting sleepy. So, another short podcast this week (which makes our podcast about the same length as everyone else rather than 2x’s as long). On the same lines, is the Internet really for ADD sufferers? Tom and Liz don’t think so. Want to win some earphones or speakers? Check out those links for contests on Audioholics (Canadians are even invited this time). Some speakers from KEF that Tom defends. A listener question about ported speakers. Will Blu-ray be dead in a few years? Roku thinks so. What happens when you piss off the Internet? This, this, and this. From the time of the podcast recording, things have escalated and it seems that the lawyer is now trying to sue the National Wildlife Federation and American Cancer Society. We shouldn’t be laughing, but we are.

AV Rant #287: On The Spot with Clint DeBoer

May 22nd, 2012 8 comments

Liz is off in Amsterdam doing whatever people do in Amsterdam (Tom guesses something to do with tulips) so Clint DeBoer steps in with some really atrocious audio (his mic got fried in a lightning strike). Tom cleaned it up the best he could. Looking for a new streaming device? Here’s a graphic to help you out. Funny part is that everything is 1080p except the Wii. Clint has Dish so we talk about the new Hopper box. Time Warner CEO out of the loop? Who would have guessed? Tom wonders what it will take to get the people in power to understand what we want. He’s thinking rebellion. Dolby Atmos – the reason Tom might go to the theaters again. Coming to your home…never. This week’s soup-to-nuts: Tom puts Clint on the spot for TV recommendations.

AV Rant #286: Tired and Cranky

May 15th, 2012 7 comments

This week – early morning for one and a cold for another. It’s complaints from both sides of the pond. Onkyo brings you Dolby TrueHD as a download…for a price. You’ll also need one of their brand new receivers to make it work. Samsung has a new display that Liz thinks is overpriced but Tom is still excited about. Here’s a hint – OLED. The new ISP from New Zealand that Tom and Liz discuss has already shut down their new service. Looks like the Kiwis will have to use VPNs to get Pandora like the rest of us. But Global Mode would have been cool. This week in Netflix – does having your content on multiple sources devalue it? Dish Network thinks so. Tom and Liz weigh in. The HBO Go model and why Tom and Liz (and most of you) think it stinks. Tom gives a preview of his Pioneer SE-MJ591 Headphone review. At $300, they aren’t perfect, but they sound pretty awesome.
