News Media is Ticking Me Off
OK, this isn’t about audio or video but it’s really getting to me how nobody seems to be able to use plain English anymore. Take this quote (in writing) from the local Omaha news station where 9 people were just killed in a mall shooting:
“Omaha police Sgt. Teresa Negron said there are nine fatalities. She said officers found the suspected shooter dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
OK, I think you can go ahead and just leave off the “suspected” part when you call the dead person with a gun in his hand who just killed 9 people in front of witnesses before shooting himself a shooter. Political correctness and the inability of people to communicate without fear of being sued is changing the sensibility of our culture, language and common sense. What a tragedy – I don’t think we need to be sensitive about the dead shooter’s rights.
Agreed. Dina pointed out this morning that the kid left a note saying he did this so he would be famous, or something to that effect, and there his photo was, plastered on cnn.com, just as he wanted it. Why do we glorify these killers with so much press??? What a shame. I doubt the people at cnn or any other big news outfit have stopped to consider that people are dead – it’s all about feeding that 24/7 news cycle…..
It’s sad that I know so little about what is going on in the world because I can’t take more than 5 minutes of the blood and gore (which I love in movies) that the news spews. It is all flash and no bang – meaning you hear the controversy but you never find out the resolution. It’s like one big unfinished story. You know who is accused of what but not who is actually convicted. It’s so pointless. The local news is the worst.
